AIM:
The main purpose behind this topic is
“Drunken driving detection” as we see number of
accidents are happening because of the alcohol
consumption of the driver. Thus drunk driving is a
major reason of accidents in almost all countries all
over the world.
ABSTRACT

• Now a days it has been an accepted fact that major

part of the accidents are due to the uneven
interruptions, inappropriate driving by the drivers. It’s a
very undesirable situation which is true.
• So a system has been proposed to automatically lock
the motor of the vehicle with the use of AT89C51, if any
alcoholic person tries to drive the car/bus/any other.
Also the potential of device will depend on the
availability of the functional components as well as the
capacity of the motor used. This could be implemented
by comparing various factors along with the
consumption of energy sources .
INRODUCTION

• Now-a-days we hear about lot of accidents due to drunken

driving. Drunken drivers will not be in stable condition and so
the rash driving is the inconvenience for other road users and
also question of life and death for the drunken drivers, also
for others.
• So an Auto Locking System has been developed. The input for
the system is from Detection Sensors either from Alcohol
Breath or any other mechanism. The controller keeps looking
for the output from these sensors. If there are any traces of
Alcohol above the set limit, then the system will lock the
Engine. Here a simulating process is activated using a DC
motor through the relay and the complete process is under
the supervision of an intelligent AT89C51 microcontroller.

SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE
1. AT89C51 MICROCONTROLLER
Now let us talk about the popular 8051 chip.
• It has on chip ROM in the form of flash
memory.
• This is ideal for fast development since flash
memory can be erased in seconds compared
to the twenty minutes or more needed for the
8751. For this reason the AT89C51 is used in
place of the 8751 to eliminate the waiting
time needed to erase the chip and thereby
speed up the development time.

2. ALCOHOL SENSOR
• The alcohol sensor will detect the alcohol content
from human (driver) breath and send it’s value to
microcontroller.
• Alcohol sensor (MQ3) is suitable for detecting
alcohol concentration just like your common
breathalyzer.
• It has a high sensitivity to small value of BAC and
fast response time, provides an analog resistive
output based on alcohol .
• It has SnO2 as gas sensitive material to sense
alcohol.

3. LCD DISPLAY
• The LCD display is fitted inside the car and this
LCD display is act as indicator to driver and
other people who are sitting inside the car.
• This display gives indication of alcohol level
detected by alcohol sensor, this also provide
warning message to driver to stop car or
vehicle within particular time afterward car
will automatically stop, indication of
smoke/gas detected in car.
4. FUEL SUPPLY BLOCKER
• When alcohol is detected while driving then
instead of stop ignition system directly while
driving state, signal is passed to fuel blocker
and fuel supply is cut-off. This results in fuel
supply cut-off to the engine. Thus the engine
stops working or doesn’t start depending on
the position of the car.
5. RELAY
• Relay is used to turn off the ignition system by passing low
power signal to ignition system that means when alcohol
detected power signal is triggered.
• The advantage of the system is that the driver cannot even
tamper with it. Because the fuel supply valve is open only
when all the components are working properly. So if anyone
tampers with it or if the alcohol content is above a particular
limit, fuel is not supplied and the vehicle cannot be started.
o Also when the fuel supply is cut-off, the car doesn’t stop
abruptly. This helps to prevent collision with the vehicles
coming behind.
o This circuit detects the alcohol directly
METHODOLOGY
• We usually come across drink and driving cases where drunk
drivers crash their cars under the influence of alcohol causing
damage to property and life. So for the safety an innovative
system is used to eliminate such cases.
• The system would be constantly monitoring the driver breath
by placing it on the driver wheel or somewhere the drivers
breath can be constantly monitored by it.
• So if a driver is drunk and tries to drive, the system detects
alcohol presence in his/her breath and locks the engine so
that the vehicle fails to start.
• In another case if the driver is not drunk while he starts the
vehicle and engine is started but he/she drinks while driving
the sensor still detects alcohol in his breath and stops the
engine so that the car would not accelerate any further and
driver can steer it to roadside.
• In this system we use a microcontroller interfaced
with an alcohol sensor along with an LCD screen and
a dc motor to demonstrate the concept.
• So here the alcohol sensor is used to monitor users
breath and constantly sends signals to the
microcontroller. The microcontroller on
encountering high alcohol signal from the alcohol
sensor displays alcohol detection note on LCD screen
and also stops the dc motor to demonstrate as
engine locking. The system needs a push button to
start the engine.
• If alcohol is detected at the time of starting the
engine the engine does not start at all.
• If alcohol is detected after engine starting, the
system locks the engine at that time with the help of
fuel supply blocker.

WORKING
Applications:
• “Alcohol detection sensors” can be used in the
various vehicles for detecting whether the
driver has consumed alcohol or not.
• This project can also be used in various
companies or organization to detect alcohol
consumption of employees.
Advantages:
• Low cost.
• Automated operation.
• Low power consumption.
• It provides an automatic safety system for cars
and other vehicles as well
Conclusion:
• In this we have developed a real time model
that can automatically lock the engine when a
drunken driver tries to drive a car.
• Now-a-days car accidents are mostly seen. By
fitting this alcohol sensor into the car, we can
save guard the life of the driver and also the
remaining passengers.
Future enhancement:
• We can implement GSM technology to inform
the relatives or owners of the vehicle about
the alcohol consumption.
• We can implement GPS technology to find out
the location of the vehicle.
