Badminton Rules
Rules of Badminton

• A game can take place with either two (singles) or four


(doubles) players.
• An official match has to be played indoors on the proper
court dimensions. The dimensions are 6.1m by 13.4m, The
net is situated through the middle of the court and is set at
1.55m.
• To score a point the shuttlecock must hit within the
parameters of the opponents court.
• If the shuttlecock hits the net or lands out then a point is
awarded to your opponent.
• Players must serve diagonally across the net to their
opponent. As points are won then serving stations move
from one side to the other. There are no second serves so if
your first serve goes out then your opponent wins the point.
• A serve must be hit underarm and below the servers waist.
No overarm serves are allowed.
• Each game will start with a toss to determine which player
will serve first and which side of the court the opponent
would like to start from.
• Once the shuttlecock is ‘live’ then a player may move around
the court as they wish. They are permitted to hit the
shuttlecock from out of the playing area.
• If a player touches the net with any part of their body or
racket then it is deemed a fault and their opponent receives
the point.
• A fault is also called if a player deliberately distracts their
opponent, the shuttlecock is caught in the racket then flung,
the shuttlecock is hit twice or if the player continues to
infract with the laws of badminton.
• Each game is umpired by a referee on a high chair who
overlooks the game. There are also line judges who monitor
if the shuttlecock lands in or not. The referee has overriding
calls on infringements and faults.
• Let may be called by the referee if an unforeseen or
accidental circumstance arose. These may include the
shuttlecock getting stuck in the bet, server serving out of
turn, one player was not ready or a decision which is too
close to call.
• The game has only two rest periods coming the form of a 90
second rest after the first game and a 5 minute rest period
after the second game.
• If the laws are continuously broken by a player then the
referee holds the power to dock that player of points with
persisting fouls receiving a forfeit of the set or even the
match.
How to play Badminton
In very simple terms…
A rally starts with a serve.
A rally ends when:
- the shuttle touches the ground or get caught by the net.
- someone commits a fault.
You’ll be awarded with ONE point when you win a rally. Win 21 rallies
and you’ll win the game.

Doubles
In/Out Boundaries. After the receiver retrieves the serve, the yellow
area becomes the In/Out boundaries. If the shuttlecock lands anywhere
within the yellow area, you get a point.

Serving and Receiving – Where to Stand?
• Where should I stand while serving and receiving? When
serving, stand within the service box; while receiving, stand
within the receiver’s box.
• For example in singles…
Basically, you can stand anywhere within the Yellow area
to serve. Ideally, you’ll want to stand at the red dot to
serve in singles.
Receiver’s Box
You can stand anywhere within the Yellow area to receive the serve.
Most players will choose to stand at the Red dot to receive the serve.
Common Question: Can I stand ON the lines of the Service and
Receiver’s box while serving/receiving?
No you can’t. It’s a fault. Any part of your feet should not be on top of
those lines.
Badminton Fouls or Fault
Basically there are 5 types of faults in badminton.
• Contact Fault
• Over the Net Fault
• Service Fault
• Receiver Fault
• Doubles Hit
Tossing for Serve

Before a match begins, opponents can toss a coin, spin a


racket, or toss a shuttle to determine who shall get the choice
of “serve’ or “side”.
Scoring
The rally point system is used in scoring the badminton game which
means any fault committed by the serving or receiving team gains
point.
Love –designates a score of zero
Love-all – is called when both opponents or teams have a score of zero
In-side – is called for the serving player or team
Out-side - is called for the receiving player or team
Game point – is the point that a server won which results to server’s
winning the match
Setting the Score
If the score is tied at 13-all or 14-all (9-all or 10-all for women’s singles)
, the Side that first scored 13 or 14 has the choice of setting (extending)
or not setting the game. When the game has been set, both scores
revert to zero, and a player must win according to the conditions
illustrated below.

Scoring System
• A match consists of the best of 3 games of 21 points.
• Every time there is a serve – there is a point scored.
• The side winning a rally adds a point to its score.
• At 20 all, the side which gains a 2 point lead first, wins that game.
• At 29 all, the side scoring the 30th point, wins that game.
• The side winning a game serves first in the next game.
Interval and Change of Ends
• When the leading score reaches 11 points, players have a 60 second
interval.
• A 2 minute interval between each game is allowed.
• In the third game, players change ends when the leading score
reaches 11 points.
Singles
• At the beginning of the game (0-0) and when the server’s
score is even, the server serves from the right service court.
When the server’s score is odd, the server serves from the
left service court.
• If the server wins a rally, the server scores a point and then
serves again from the alternate service court.
• If the receiver wins a rally, the receiver scores a point and
becomes the new server. They serve from the appropriate
service court – left if their score is odd, and right if it is even.
Doubles
• A side has only one ‘service’.
• The service passes consecutively to the players as shown in the diagram.
• At the beginning of the game and when the score is even, the server serves
from the right service court. When it is odd, the server serves from the left
court.
• If the serving side wins a rally, the serving side scores a point and the same
server serves again from the alternate service court.
• If the receiving side wins a rally, the receiving side scores a point. The receiving
side becomes the new serving side.
• The players do not change their respective service courts until they win a point
when their side is serving.
• If players commit an error in the service court, the error is corrected when the
mistake is discovered.
