Switches

• A switch is used to make or break the electric

circuit. It must make the contact firmly.

• Under some abnormal conditions, it must

retain its rigidity and keep its alignment
firmly between switch blades and contacts by
a fraction of cm.
Switches
Types of Switches
• Surface Switch or Tumbler switch
• Flush Switch
• Pull Switches or Ceiling Switches
• Rotary Snap Switches
• Push Button Switch
• Iron-Clad Water Tight Switch
Surface Switch or Tumbler Switch
• These switches are mounted
on the mounting block
directly fixed over the
surface of the wall

• Such type of switches

project out of the surface of
the wall

• They can be classified as

Single way
Two way switch
Flush Switch

• These switches are fixed

with the wall and they don’t
project out

• They can be classified as

Single way
Two way switch
Pull Switches or Ceiling Switches

• These switches are fixed on

the ceiling and all the live
parts are out of reach of the
operator.

• The switch has strong

mechanical action and is
usually operated with a
single pull for on or off
Rotary Snap Switches
• The rotary switch consists of
an insulated handle to which
are fixed the blades.

• These blades move in steps by

the movement of the handle
and make contact with the
terminals that connect the
wires in the electric circuit.

• The movement of the handle

is controlled by a cam or a
spring.
Push Button Switch
• This type of switch has only
one blade only.

• The blade is given a

rocking action by press
buttons and its movement is
controlled by a cam and a
spring.

• The blade opens or closes

with a quick action
Iron Clad Water Tight switches

• Such switches are of cast

iron and have robust
construction.

• A cook gasket is fitted

between the case and the
cover which makes it
watertight.
Lamp Holders
Lamp Holders
• A Lamp holder is used to hold the lamp for
lighting purposes.

Types :
Pendent holder
Batten holder (Incandescent bulbs)
Screw Lamp holders (Bulbs 200W and above)
Fluorescent lamp holders (Fluorescent lamps)
Starter holders (Tube light starters)

Lamp Holder Adopter
Lamp Holder Adopter
• It is used for tapping temporary power for
small portable electric appliances from lamp
holders (Not advised )
Ceiling Roses
Ceiling Roses

These are used to provide a tapping to the lamp

holder through the flexible wire or a connection to a
Fluorescent tube or ceiling fan.
Mounting Blocks
Mounting Blocks

• These are nothing but wooden round blocks.

• They are used in conjunction with ceiling
roses, batten lamp holders, surface switches,
ceiling switches.
Plugs
Plugs

• They are used for tapping power from socket

outlets.
Main Switch
Main Switch

• This is used at the consumers premises so

they he can have self control to the entire
distribution circuit.
Socket Outlets
Socket Outlets

• The socket outlets have all the insulated base

with moulded or socket base having three
terminal sleeves.
Distribution Fuse Boards
Distribution Fuse Boards
• In Industries or big buildings, where a number of
circuits are to be wired, distribution fuse boards
are used

• They are usually Iron clad and are designed with

larger space for wiring and splitting the circuits

• The fuse bank in the distribution board can be

easily removed
Wiring Accessories Used
Wiring Accessories
• Screw Driver • Hand drill
• Cutting Plier • Auger bit
• Long nose plier • Rawlplug tool
• Slip plier • Centre punch
• Pocket Knife • Blow lamp
• Hammer • Wire gauge
• Woodsaw
• Hacksaw
• Chiseld
• Scratch awl
Factors deciding wiring
Type of Wiring depends on various factors,

Durability
Safety
Appearance
Cost
Budget
Types of Wiring
Cleat Wiring

Wooden Casing Capping

TRS Wiring

Conduit Wiring
Types of Wiring
Cleat Wiring
V I R Conductors supported in porcelain cleats

V I R – Vulcanised
India Rubber
Wooden Casing Capping
• This type is most commonly used for
residential buildings.
• It consists of rectangular wooden blocks called
casing with two grooves into which wires are
laid.
• The casing at the top is covered by means of
capping (made of wood)
• Wires of same polarity run into the same
groove, but the wires of opposite polarity run
into different grooves.
T R S Wiring (Tip Ring Sleeve)
It is a tough rubber sheathed wiring.

The T R S cables are available in single, twin or three

cores with circular or oval shape.

The cable is quite flexible and has an insulation which

resists rough usage, moisture, climatic conditions,
acids but slightly affected by lubricating oils.

They run on wall surface or buried in plaster.

Conduit Wiring
V I R conductors are run in
metallic tubes called conduits

It is the best system of wiring

which provides mechanical
protection, safety against fire
and shock if bonding and earthing are well done

This is most desirable for workshops and public

buildings.
Wiring Circuits
• In this wiring a simple lamp is controlled from
two places

• Two numbers of two way switches are used.

Fluorescent Tube
Main parts of Tube light are

• Fluorescent Tube
• Choke(Ballast)
• Starter
• Holder, wire etc.
• Fluorescent lights are among the most
popular lighting system used worldwide.

• Fluorescent tubes/lamps are filled with

mercury vapour. They use electric charge to
excite mercury atoms in order to produce
ultra violet light.

• A glow starter or commonly known as starter

is used in the tube light circuit to provide an
initial current to filaments of the tube light.
• When the switch is pressed current cannot pass
through the tube initially because the gas inside it
is not ionized and hence the tube light circuit
behaves as open circuit.
• Once the gas is ionized, it will provide a
conduction path for the current to flow. In order
to ionize the gas, an initial high voltage is
required for a short period across the filaments of
the main tube.
• That is what a starter does. A starter initially
provides a path to complete the circuit and once
tube light starts the current flows through the
ionized gas in the main tube.
