algebraic expression,
expression one or more term
connected by plus and minus

Constant- number
in each term.
Constant term- a
single number
Example: -4x +5
Term- any number, variable
and product of
several number
 and variable.

MODULE 3:
DEGREE OF
POLYNOMIAL
DEGREE OF POLYNOMIAL
 The degree of a term that has only one variable
is the exponent of the variables.
 The degree of a polynomial that has only one
variable is the highest power appearing in any of
the terms
 The degree of a term that has more than one
variable is the sum of exponent of the variables.
 The degrees of a
polynomial in more than
one variable is the highest
sum of the exponent of the
variables in any of the
terms.
Exercises 4: Degree of Polynomial

MODULE 4:
ADDITION AND
SUBTACTION OF
POLYNOMIALS
RULES IN ADDING POLYNOMIALS
1. Arrange the polynomials so that similar terms are in the same
vertical column.
2. Find the sum of the terms in each column.
Example 1:
Add: a. (3 𝒙𝟐 - 5x – 6)+(6 𝒙𝟐 - 8x + 9)
b. (7 𝒙𝟐 y+ 3xy – 4x 𝐲 𝟐 ) + (-3 𝒙𝟐 y – 8xy + 9x𝒚𝟐 )
Solutions: a. 3 𝒙𝟐 - 5x – 6 b. 7 𝒙𝟐 y + 3xy – 4x 𝐲 𝟐
+ 6 𝒙𝟐 - 8x + 9 + -3 𝒙𝟐 y – 8xy + 9x𝐲 𝟐
Answer: 8 𝒙𝟐 -13x + 3 Answer: 4 𝒙𝟐 y – 5xy + 5x 𝐲 𝟐
RULES IN SUBTRACTION POLYNOMIALS
1. Arrange the minuend and the subtrahend so that similar
terms are in the same column.
2. Add the inverse of each term of the subtrahend to the
correspond
-ding terms of the minuend.
3. In step 2, the procedure is equivalent to changing the sign of
each term in the subtrahend and the proceeding as in
addition. At first, the change in signs may be shown as indicated
in the solutions
Example 2:
Subtract: a. (7 𝒙𝟐 y+ 3xy – 4x 𝐲 𝟐 ) – (-3 𝒙𝟐 y – 8xy + 9x𝒚𝟐 )

Solution: a. 7 𝒙𝟐 y+ 3xy – 4x 𝐲 𝟐
– 3 𝒙𝟐 y – 8xy + 9x𝒚𝟐
4 𝐱 𝟐 y – 5xy + 5x𝒚𝟐
