SAN BOOT BENEFIT
Occurrence of faults can be reduced by the use of a highly fault-tolerance
storage device
The disk of multiples servers can be integrated and operations management
can be facilited
Quick recovery from server hardware faults is enabled by use of N+M cold
stanby feature

SAN BOOT SETUP

Preparition:
 Verify the additional WWNs have been assigned through the
initialize operation.
 For basic OS mode boot from SAN use the additional WWN in the
host group for the mapping of the boot lun.
 get the drivers
 Fiber channel driver
 Other OS and server blade drivers
SAN BOOT SETUP
Hardware preparition:
 SAN storgae
 Dual controllers
 Dual ports
 Fiber channel switch
 Multiple ports to accommodate FC traffic and server blades
 NPIV support for LPAR virtualization
 Server Fiber Channel HBAs
 Dual ports if multipath or load balancing requires
 1 HBA with dual ports is different from 2 HBAs
 2 HBA provide path redundacy and load balancing data traffic
• Operrating system multi-path software for failover
Ensure that LUN for OS storage is 0
WWN CONFIGURATION HITACHI COMPUTE BLADE 2000

TERM DESCRIPTION
Original A WWN that is unique and permanent to a spesific fibre channel board.
WWN
Addtional An additional WWN assigned : the WWN can be changed and is used only in
WWN compute blade. When a fibre channel board is replaced the additional WWN remain
is unchanged.
Virtual FC A virtual WWN is generated by HVM each HVM system . When a fibre channel
WWN board is replaced the virtual FC WWN remain is unchanged.
CONFIGURATION HBA for SAN boot
• After the OS startup and booting the bios, the blade will show the option or
command to configure HBA setting on bios boot screen

• The configure of HBA will show, WWN from storage choose one of the HBA to
install the operating system on Storage using SAN boot
SUMMARY
San Boot has many adantages

• The operating system can store in storage and can be loaded in

different machine using N + M cold stanby

• Minimize crash the operating system after the hardware server

problem

• The HBA BIOS setting required for SAN boot configuration
