(SCHOOL MONITORING, EVALUATION, AND PLAN ADJUSTMENT)

QUARTER 3
Theme: Efficiency and
Holding Power of Schools
Most Significant Change
One of the alarming issues in Philippine educational system is the
increasing number of non-readers who reached secondary education.
These learners can not even recognize the sound or name of the letter.
They have a poor understanding and comprehension of what they are
reading, hearing and watching that deprive them to learn and enjoy
schooling. This is also evident with the outcome of their grades in
different subject areas.
Saravia National High School, as an academic institution, which
cares for these non-readers, extends time and efforts just to cater the
needs of these victims of indescribable quality of education we have in
the Philippines.
In fact, teachers find time or even extend time just to teach
these learners with basic reading. There are some learning activities
and reading strategies incorporated in different subject areas just to
boost the reading program of the school. Peer tutorial was also
observed during the conduct of remediation.
With the extensive efforts rendered by various language teachers
with the help and support of other subject area teachers, higher grades
and the principal, the almost 3 months of reading remediation had
paved way to let some our beneficiaries able to read.
Some of these non-readers to readers success story are the
stories of Glenn Rinan Calabe and Justine Malantoc.
Glenn Rinan Calabe,14, a Muslim and Grade 8 student from Sitio
Badac, was diagnosed during the opening of class as non-reader.
Before, he can not even recognize the sound of the letter or vice versa.
When he was asked to read the passage, he was just remained in
silence. Truly, he cannot literary read.
But things get better as he submitted himself to regular reading
remediation. With his consistent attendance and enthusiasm to learn,
now, Glenn Rinan Calabe could able to associate the sound to letter
and vice versa. He can even read three-word letter or more. At present,
he is now developing his fluency and comprehension.
Another success story is the transformation of Justine Malantoc. He is 14
year old Blaan resident of El-Gawel. His story is different from Mr. Calabe.
Due to long distance from his home to school and considering his family’s
social status prohibited him to attend classes and hinder him to learn like the
normal students. Diagnosed as non-reader, Justine just like Glenn, can not
produce the sound of what he is reading. In fact, he just skipped the words
he can not utter and worst is he read words differently.
With the encouragement, love and effort of the teachers and his with
co-students, Justine Malantoc now is enjoying learning and going to school
as he could able now to read and hopefully in the next months to come, he
could comprehend and respond to what he is reading, hearing and watching.
Indeed, nothing is impossible for a school that unites, cooperates and
works for every non-reader. The stories of Mr. Calabe and Mr. Malantoc are
just some of the few that Saravia National High School is addressing now.
