INTRODUCTION
• The 6th National Population and Housing Census was held in Pakistan after a lapse of about 19
years.

• The census was under taken in two phases:

I. 15th March-15th April 2017

II. 25th April-25th May 2017

• The census will provide information regarding

i. Population

ii. Growth trend

iii. Employment

iv. Urban & Rural population

v. Male –Female ratio


• Results of 6th National Population and Housing census shows that increase of 57 % in
population.
• The total population is 207.77 million as compared 132.35 million in 1998.
• The average household size is 6.45 persons
• Average Population National Growth rate is 2.4%
• In urban areas it is 2.70 %
• In rural areas it is 2.23 %
PROVINCIAL BREAK UP OF POPULATION
• Average population growth rate has declined from 2.6 % in 1998 to 2.4 % in 2017.

• Islamabad has highest population growth rate of 4.91 %.

• Islamabad’s population increases from 0.81 million (1998) to 2.0 million (2017).

• Population in Sindh and Punjab have seen decline

• Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Baluchistan have recorded an increase in the population growth rate.

• In federally administered tribal areas (fata), the population growth rate has increased from 2.1

percent in 1998 to 2.41 percent in 2017.

URBANIZATION IN PAKISTAN

• The population of ten major cities has increased by 74 %compared to 1998 census.

• The urban population shows a growing trend with 36.38%.

• Sindh is the most urbanized with 52.02 % of its population.

• In Punjab population increases from 31.27 – 36.71%.

• Urbanization increases from 16.87 - 18.77% in KPK.

• In Baluchistan it increases from 23.89 – 27.55 %.
