Flarenet Sharing

Session

Yona, 11 Sept 2009

Overview

What is flarenet?
Its very user friendly software & it’s a steady state flare & relief
network simulator

What is the use?

Able to model flare system from valve to flare tip with required
data input for conceptual and detail design to evaluate
maximum possible back pressure at header, sub-header, KO Drum
and tail pipes.

Flarenet sizes & check the network against design constraint and
any violations will be flagged clearly by the program
Software capabilities

• Able to do calculations in design/rate or debottleneck (pg. 18) mode

• Able to perform Single/multiphase flow
• Simple mol wt/ full composition analysis method
• Sizing of main header/ PSV inlet piping with 3% pressure drop criteria
• Multiple or single scenario analysis
• Pressure drop can be generated for all the fittings by Engg. standards
• Calculates Noise, ρV2, velocity, mach no. and valve back pressure
• Automatic violation warning
• Flare tip modeling – pressure/flow summary
• Interfaces to Hysys/Aspen software and excel

Following are the documents/information required to
start FLARENET modeling:
Process Input
• P&ID’s for HP & LP flare header
• Relief valve datasheet/Summary sheet
• Blowdown Summary sheet
• Process Design Basis ( For information on minimum wind
speed and minimum ambient temperature)
• Vendor curves for flare stack
Piping Input
• Latest Plot plan
• Isometrics of main HP & LP flare header
• Isometrics of tail pipes (assume length based on plot plan in
early stage and update it later based on actual piping
Isometrics)
• Updated model based on piping layout

HSE Input
• Identify fire zones on plot plan
GETTING STARTED
Following are the steps for starting flare network modeling :

• Feed initial data (project description, units & components)

• Build the pipe network.
• Define the scenarios.
• Define the sources.
• Sizing the network (Results).

Components
There are numbers of components available in
database list. Select as per project basis from
the checkboxes.

main
Build the Pipe Network

• Define all the pipe segment data

• Connectivity (upstream and downstream).
• Length and fitting loss.
• Diameter and pipe schedule.

Defining the scenario
Different scenarios will be set up to stimulate various process
condition
Define the system design constrains
- Maximum allowable mach number.
- Maximum allowable noise.
- Maximum allowable liquid velocity.
- Maximum allowable Rho V2.

Defining the Sources

• Define the flow and composition.

• Maximum Allowable Back Pressure (MABP).
• Downstream temperature.
• Upstream pressure and temperature.
• Discharge flange and size.

To Help
Sizing the network
Select option from the calculation menu where needs to set the
calculation options before starting the sizing

Offshore Flares
Offshore Flares Installation:
1. Flare boom or tower connected to the production facilities by a
bridge supported pipe (see image)
2. Floating flare secured to the seabed and connected to the
production facility by a flexible hose (see image)
3. Boom cantilevered from the production facility structure (see
image)
4. Vertical flare tower mounted on the production facility structure
(see image)

High- Pressure Flare Tips Commonly used:

1. Multi- nozzle Sonic Flares
2. Coanda Flares
3. Supersonic flares
