 Petroleum industry is one of the fastest growing
industries .
 It significantly contributes to economic growth in
developing countries like India.
 The wastewater from a petroleum industry consist a
wide variety of pollutants like
 Petroleum hydrocarbons
 Oil and grease
 Phenol
 Ammonia
 Sulfide
 All these compounds are present as very complex
form in discharged water of petroleum industry,
which are harmful for environment directly or
indirectly.
 Some of the techniques used to treat oily
waste/wastewater from the petroleum/oil
industry are :-
 Membrane technology
 Photocatalytic degradation
 Advanced oxidation process
 Electrochemical catalysis
 ADSORPTION
 Membrane bioreactor (MBR) is the combination of
a membraneprocess like microfiltration or ultrafiltr
ation with a biological wastewater
treatment process, the activated sludge process. It
is now widely used for municipal and industrial
wastewater treatment.
Recent technical innovation and significant
membrane cost reduction have enabled MBRs
to become an established process option to
treat wastewaters. As a result, the MBR
process has now become an attractive option
for the treatment and reuse of industrial and
municipal wastewaters, as evidenced by
their constantly rising numbers and capacity.
The current MBR market has been estimated
to value around US$216 million in and to rise
to US$363 million in time .
 The filtration element is installed in either the
main bioreactor vessel or in a separate tank.
 The membranes can be flat sheet or tubular or
combination of both, and can incorporate an
online backwash system which reduces
membrane surface fouling by pumping
membrane permeate back through the
membrane.
 Where the membranes are installed in the main
reactor, membrane modules are removed from
the vessel and transferred to an offline cleaning
tank.
 The filtration elements are installed
externally to the reactor
 often in a plant room.
 The biomass is either pumped directly
through a number of membrane modules in
series and back to the bioreactor, or the
biomass is pumped to a bank of modules,
from which a second pump circulates the
biomass through the modules in series.
 Cleaning and soaking of the membranes can
be undertaken in place with use of an
installed cleaning tank, pump and pipework.
 The MBR system can provide Good Quality
effluent that is completely acceptable for
reuse.
 Reclaimed water can be directly reused for
municipal watering, toilet flushing and car
washing. After the softening treatment, the
reclaimed water can be used as a cooling
water supply or processing water.
 Wastewater can be effectively harnessed,
and moreover, large quantities of water can
be saved.
 WATER REUSE FOR PROCESS WATER .
 REDUCE FRESH WATER INTAKE BY 20 % TO
50 % .
 REDUCE OR ELIMINATE LIQUIED EFFUENT
DISCHARGE .
 LOWER OPERATING COST ASSOCIATED WITH
TOTAL PLANT WATER CYCLE .
 REDUCE FOOTPRINT OF BIOLIGICAL
TREATMENT BY 50 %
