New testament of colossians
WHY READ THIS BOOK ?

• Some people have been surprised to discover

something new about a friend they thought they knew
well. That’s one of the exciting things about a
relationship with Christ; there’s no limit to things we can
learn about him. Reading Collosians is one way we can
discover a few more things about Jesus and learn how
we can honor him.
WHO WROTE THIS BOOK AND
TO WHOM WAS IT WRITTEN ?

While under house arrest in Rome, the apostle Paul wrote

tto believers in the small city of Colosse, located in the
southwest interior of what is now Turkey.

WHEN WAS IT WRITTEN ?

About A.D. 60 to 62. During the time Paul awaited trial on
appeal to the Roman emperor Nero.
WHY WAS IT WRITTEN ?
A group called Gnostic (derived from the world for
knowledge)claimed that they possesed privileged
supernatural knowledge necesarry for salvation. Paul
wrote to warn about the subtle arguments and false
teachings that threatened to undermine the Colosians’
faith.

WHAT IS THE BACKGROUND OF THIS BOOK ?

Epaphras, a disciple of Paul, had founded the church
at Colosse. Now it was under constant pressure from
the numerous religious philosophies abounding in the
first-century world. Colosse seems to have becaome a
center for Gnosticism, a hybird religion and philosophy
that mixed Christian. Jewish and possibly pagan
beliefs.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN COLOSSIANS;
• The supremacy of Christ and what that means for our
everyday lives. Look for insights that show specific ways
we can develop attitudes and actions to honor the Lord.

NEW TESTAMENT OF 1 AND 2 TIMOTHY
WHY READ THIS BOOK ?
• 1 Timothy : if you learn to play a musical instrument, you will
eventually learn to play that instrument with others. Christians
are not solo instrumental. They are called to harmonizw with
others in a group called the church. What you’re about to
read is like a conductor’s handbook. It summarizes guidelines
for runnuing a church, offering pratical help tp believers in
their relationships with each other, with church leaders and
with the world arround them
• 2 Timothy : the last of a dying personhave a significant
impact on others. In a sense, 2 timothy is like that. It’s advice
from someone who knows he’s come to the end of life. Paul,
imprisoned in Rome for the second time, realized he would not
be released. Facing death as a martyr, he wrote carefully to
the heart of the gospel. His “dyinng words” are words for us to
live by.
WHO WROTE THIS BOOK AND WHY ?

• 1 and 2 Timothy : Paul, the apostle

WHEN WAS IT WRITTEN ?

• 1 Timothy : sometimes shortly after Paul was released from

imprisonment in Rome, ptobably arround a.d 63-65
• 2 Timothy : Probably a.d 66-67, while Paul was held in Roman
prison.
TO WHOM WAS IT WRITTEN ANS WHY ?

• 1 Timothy : Paul wrote to Timothy with advice on how to

better lead the church at Ephesus (see The Church in Ephesus
on page 1613). False teachers threatened to undermine Paul’s
work there and Timothy, one of Paul’s dear friends, was a
touhgt spot.
• 2 Timothy : Many of Paul’s supporters perhaps sensung the
hoelessness of his situatuion. Had abandoned him in prsion.
Time hung heavey for Paul who was suffering both physically
and emotionally. His difficult circumstance, concern for
churches he’d begun and, mot least of all, his love for timothy,
spurred him to write the words
WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN 1 AND 2 TIMOTHY ?

• 1 Timothy : This pratical, nitty-gritty wisdom must be

understood within the specific situation Paul was addressing.
As you read, you might repeatedly ask, “ I wonder what
conditions in Ephesus prompted Paul to write that?” Look for
underlying principless. You might imagine eaversdropping on
the conversation between and older minister and a troubled,
younger minister. Though specific problems and answers might
never be exactly duplicated the principkes of the gospel
never change.
• 2 Timothy : Look for pithy statements, Paul’s attempts to pull
together the wisdom of a lifetime of service of God. Watch
particularly for the ways he challenged Timothy to a more
effective ministry. The nuggets contained in this booj were
forged in the crucible of life-threateninf experiences, but they
point to the hope that belongs to all of us in Christ.
