CONTINENT`S LITERATURE
 SOUTH KOREA is the body of literature produced by
Koreans.
 Korea is home to the world's first metal and copper type.
 Earliest known printed document and the world's first featural
script.
 Korean literature has its roots in traditional folk beliefs
and folk tales of the Korean peninsula.
 Korean prose literature can be divided into narratives,
fiction, and literary miscellany.
 Most authors translated by the Korea Literature
Translation Institute for translation.
AUTHOR`S
BACKGROUND
 Kyung-Sook Shin-She is the
 first South Korean and first woman to win the Man
Asian Literary Prize in 2012 for Please look after mom.
 She made her literary debut in 1985 with the
novella Winter’s Fable after graduating from the Seoul
Institute of the arts.
 Shin has won a wide variety of literary prizes including
the Today’s Young Artist Award from the South
Korean Ministry of Culture.
VOCABULARY

CHARACTER:
• Park So-nyo - mother of four children
 Hyong-chol - So-nyo's oldest son
 Chi-hon - So-nyo's eldest daughter
 Yu-bin - Chi-hon's boyfriend
 FATHER- is portrayed as fundamentally irresponsible
and self indulgent; he drinks, works irregularly, has affairs,
disappears frequently, and the whole time assues Mom is both
willing and able to compensate for him.
SETTING

ANALYSIS
 INTRODUCTION

One day in a busy train station in Seoul,


South Korea, Park So-nyo, the 69-year-old mother of
four children, is separated from her absent-minded
husband of the same age. She cannot read and is
socially timorous, so they know that she won’t be able
to easily get back to them.
 Her family wastes no time in printing fliers and
posting them all over the city.
 But in searching for his mother, Hyong-choi
wonders if he should have been there to pick
them up from the train station. After all, they
are simple country people; he criticizes himself
for expecting them to just easily find their way
through a major metropolitan area.
Hyung-chol`s Perspective
RISING ACTION
 He regrets that he didn`t pick up his parents.
 He visits the place where people saw the mom.

 He recalls his childhood he was mom`s favorite
child.
 He recalls when he came in seoul to get a job , and
mom visited in seoul for him ( High School
Graduation Certificate)
Father Perspective
Climax
 Father came back home in jeung-eup and he couldn`t
find mom even though he felt like mom was in home as
usual.
 Hong tae-hee who works in orphange visited home ,she
said that mom volunteered and donated money every
month in orphange.
 Mom asked tae-hee to read her daughter`s book
*flashback
 He didn`t care her wife when she was very sick and
when she was so sad because of the death of Kyun who
was her brother in law.
Mom`s Perspective
FALLING ACTION
*Foreshadowing= bird and mom`s dead
 Mom appeared as bird, and she began to talk
about her life and how much she loved her family.
 Mom said that she didn`t remember anything
when she separated with father in
station.(headache)
 Mom had a secret boy friend who helped her
several time.
Chi-hon`s Perspective
Resolution
*Nine months after mom went missing.
 Chi-hon is in Italy with her boyfriend, and she thought
about family since mom went missing.
 Family almost gave up to find mom, and she couldn`t
understand that situation .But ,it is inevitable.
 Chi-hon remembered that mom asked her to buy
rosewood rosary if she visit Vatican City someday ,and
she bought rosewood rosary.
 She prays to Pieta "Please, please look after mom".
THEME
 Self Sacrifice
By sacrificing herself, she put the lives and well being
of her children before her own.
 Past and Present
Reveal aspects of Mom's past that have haunted her
every present day since.
 Shifting Nature of Identity
The experiences and resultant transformational
journeys of two of the central characters can be seen
as evoking the shifting nature of identity.
SYMBOLISM
 Hope House
This is the orphanage run by Hong Tae-hee visited and financially
supported by Mom.
 Nickel Basin
The basin is a gift from Mom's beloved Kyun and as such is a
representation of the kind of devoted love that he gave to her in
ways that her biological children did not display.
 Mom's Mink Coat
This expensive article of clothing is purchased for Mom by her
youngest daughter who recognizes the comfort the coat offers
and the urgency with which Mom seeks that comfort.
 Vatican
The Vatican in Rome is the seat of the worldwide Roman
Catholic Church.
 Pieta
The Pieta is the term used for both a particular artistic subject and
one of the most famous representations of that subject in the
world.
 Persimmon Tree
Chi-hon's sister refers to a seedling persimmon tree given to her
by Mom in the hopes that it would eventually bear fruit.
Figure of Speech use:
 Metaphor- is a figure of speech that, for
rhetorical effect, directly refers to one
thing by mentioning another.
“It doesn’t have to be the mom who
disappears; it could be anything precious
to us that has been lost, as we’ve moved
from a traditional society to a modern
society.”
