Breast milk is the most complete
nutritional package for infants!
It cannot be duplicated through any other
infant feeding choice. From the first
moments of life, Breastfeeding has
positive developmental impacts throughout
the child’s life, even after breastfeeding
has stopped.

Government policies to promote
breast feeding
Maternity Benefit (Amendment)
Act, 2017
• The Maternity Benefit (Amendment) Bill
2017,an amendment to the Maternity Benefit
Act, 1961
Increased Paid Maternity Leave
• The Maternity Benefit Amendment Act
(March - 2017) has increased the duration of
paid maternity leave available for women
employees (Central Government )from the
existing 12 weeks to 26 weeks.
Nine months maternity leave
Government of Tamil
Nadu increased the
maternity leave period
from the existing six
months or 180 days to
nine months, i.e. 270
days.

According to Tamil Nadu Fundamental rule(101 A)

Breaks for breast feeding
• Article 42 of the Indian
Constitution and under
the Maternity Benefit
Act of 1961 provides
for two nursing breaks
for every nursing
mother until her child
is 15 months old.
Nursing space
• The mother can go to
the child or the child be
brought to the mother
during work hours. If
the child is brought to
the mother, nursing
space should also be
provided.
Work from Home option
• Depending upon the nature of work, women
employees may be able to avail this benefit on
terms that are mutually agreed with the
employer.
Crèche facility
• Crèche facility mandatory for every
establishment employing 50 or more
employees.
• Women employees would be permitted to
visit the crèche 4 times during the day.
India launches MAA - a programme to
promote breastfeeding
• To enhance optimal
breastfeeding practices
which includes initiation
of breastfeeding within
an hour of birth,
exclusive breastfeeding
for the first six months,
and continued
breastfeeding for at least
two years.
MAA(Mother’s Absolute Affection )
• An opportunity to improve rates of
breastfeeding and appropriate child
feeding practices in the country
• The government will train nurses in
government hospitals, Accredited Social
Health Activists (ASHA), Auxiliary Nurse
Mid-wives (ANM) to provide relevant
information and counselling support to
mothers for breastfeeding.
