Job Redesigning

Restructuring the elements including tasks,

duties and responsibilities of a specific job in
order to make it more encouraging and
inspiring for the employees or workers is known
as job redesigning.
Boosting Productivity
through job redesign

The Atlantic American insurance company in Atlanta

conducted a workflow analysis to identify inefficiencies in
how it processes its insurance claims.

What did this involve?

As the firm’s HR manager said,” We followed the life of a

claim to where it arrived in the mail and where it eventually
ended up” in order to find ways to improve the process.
Contd.

The workflow analysis prompted several

performance-boosting redesigns of the
insurance claim jobs.
Steps taken by that
company

The firm reduced from four to one number of people

opening mail.

 Replacing three people with a machine that does it

automatically.

A new date stamping machine lets staff stamp 20 pages

at a time rather than 1.
Contd.

A new software program adds bar codes to each claim

automatically, rather than manually.

It’s redesign lowered it’s costs.

Objectives
 Place the right person at right job

 Increase the maximum output by

increasing their (employees) level of
satisfaction.
Guidelines for
redesigning the jobs

Identifying a business process to be redesigned.

Measure the performance of existing processes.

Identifying opportunities to improves these processes.

Redesign and implement a new way of doing the work.

Contd.

Assign ownership of sets of formerly separate tasks to

an individual or a team who use new computerised
systems to support the new arrangement.
Some thing to be
known

Early economists described why specialised jobs (doing the

same small thing repeatedly) was more efficient (as in,
”practice makes perfect”).But sooner, others veiwed as the
“dehumanizing” aspects of pigeonholing workers into highly
repetitive jobs.

These workers weren’t motivated.

Methods of redesigning
the jobs

Job Enlargement :-
Assigning workers additional
same-level activities.

Job Rotation :-
Systematically moving workers from
one job to another.
Contd.

Job Enrichment:-
Redesigning jobs in a way that
increases the opportunities for the worker to experience
feelings of responsibility, achievement, growth and
recognition.

According to psychologist Fredrick Herzberg, it is the best

way to motivate the workers by giving skills, authority.
Contd.

At the argued company, managers enrich jobs in several

ways:

Form natural work group. For example, put a team in

charge of an identifiable body of work, such as processing an
entire claim.

Combine tasks. Let one person assemble a product from

start to finish instead of having it go through separate
operations performed by different people.
Contd.

Establish client relationship :-

Let the worker have contact as often as
possible with the client of that person’s work.

Vertically load the job :-

Have the worker, rather than the supervisor,
plan, schedule, troubleshoot, and control his or her job.

Open feedback channels:-

To more and better ways for the worker to
get quick feedback on performance.
