HUMAN
1and PERSON IN
Enculturation THE
ENVIRONMENT
 What is the world
made of?
 How did the world
come into being?
 How can we explain
the process of change?
Those are
philosophical
questions brought up
approximately 600
B.C.E in the Western
Ionian seaport town of
Miletus across the
Hegan Sea from
Athens Greece
Explores Nature

 Eastern – through spiritual

sages
 Greek – through cognitive
and scientific eyes
How does philosophy
define the person’s
relationship with the
environment?
Environmental philosophy or
Environmental ethics
 It is the discipline in philosophy
that studies the moral
Ta relationship of human being with
the environment and its non-
human contents
Three Major Views Regarding the
Relationship Between Humanity
and the Environment

1.Anthropocentrism
 focuses on the significant role
of humankind in the world and
considers nature as the means by
which humans are able to meet
their needs and survive.
This view believes that
humans are the most
important species on
the planet and they
are free to transform
nature and use its
resources.
Three Major Views Regarding the
Relationship Between Humanity and
the Environment

2. Biocentrism
 believes that humans are not the
only significant species on the
planet, and that all organisms
have inherent value and should be
protected.
This view drives the activities
of humane organizations that
advocate the ethical treatment
of animals. In fact, our
government has passed laws
that recognize the rights of
animals to be treated kindly,
such as R.A 8485 or “The
Animal Welfare Act of 1998”.
Three Major Views Regarding the
Relationship Between Humanity and
the Environment

3. Ecocentrism
 places great value on ecosystems
and biological communities. This
view believes that humankind is
part of greater biological system
or community and that we have a
significant role as stewards or
guardian of nature.
Carbon footprint
 The amount of carbon
dioxide and other carbon
compounds emitted due
to the consumption of
fossil fuels by an individual
event organization on
product.

Greenhouse Gases
 Carbon dioxide
 Methane
 Nitrous oxide
 Flouride
Due to hunting and fishing 52% of
wild life population deteriorated

Humanity needs to develop an

ecological conscience which
motivates us to adopt a lifestyle
that involves simple living that
honors the right of the life forms
to live, flourish and create a rich
diversity of human and non-
human life.
\
How can humanity
address the damage
inflicted on the
environment?
One important
development that arose
during the late twentieth
O century was
Environmentalism
Environmentalism
This perspective advocates to
address the growing
environmental problems.
Philosophy has significant role
O in the development of
environmental awareness and
action. Several ideas and
perspectives regarding
environmental action have
emerged.
Environmental ethics
 This moral approach that
analyzes the relationship
between humans and the
environment. It also discusses
environmental problems caused
O by human activities and social
issues that impact the
environment.
ANCIENT THINKERS
Socialization
Milessians
 regarded nature as spatially
without boundaries
Anaximander
 employed the term “boundless”
to convey the further thought
that nature is indeterminate

Chinese Philosophers
 All that happens in the universe is
continuous whole like a chain of natural

Enculturation
consequences
Pythagoras
 described the universe as living
Socialization
embodiment of nature’s order,
harmony and beauty

MODERN THINKERS
Immanuel Kant
 expresses that beauty is ultimately
a symbol of morality.

Herbert Marcue
 Humanity had dominated nature.
This can only be change if we will
change our attitude towards our
Enculturation
perception of our environment
Socialization
George Herbert Mead
 as human beings, we do not have
only rights but duties

Enculturation
Socialization
Sustainability
This concept focuses on
reconciling human activities
and economic development
with the protection of
environment

Enculturation
Shows that the care for the
Environment contributes to
Socialization
the healthy well-being and
sustainable development
A.Deep Ecology
 For this theory ecological crisis is
an outcome of an
anthropocentricism.
 The controlling attitude of
humankind is extended to nature
 Deep ecologist encourage
humanity to shift away from
anthropocentrism to eccocentrism

Enculturation
Social Ecology
Socialization
 For this theory, ecological crisis
result from authoritarian social
structures. Destroying nature is a
reflection wherein few people
overpower others while exploring
the environment for profit or self-
interest.
Social ecologist call for small scale
societies, which recognize that
humanity is linked with the well-
being of the natural world in which

Enculturation
human life depends
Ecofeminism
Socialization
 This theory argues that
ecological crisis is a
consequence of male
dominance.
E  In this view whatever is
superior is entitled to
whatever is inferior.
 Male traits as in the
anthropocentric model are
superior as opposesd to
female traits as in the
Enculturation
eccocentric model.
Socialization
These theories value the care,
conservation, reservation of
nature and humanity, our
search for the meaning of life
must explore not just our own
survival but calls for a new
social ecological order

Enculturation
Sustainability relies on
Socialization
three important
principles:

1. Environmental
Integrity
2. Economic Efficiency
3. Equity

Theories of
Socialization
Mass Media
Dominant-ideology model

 Traces this bias to links

between media and the
political and social elite

Enculturation
Environmental Integrity
 refers to the maintaining the
Socialization
state of the environment

Economic Efficiency
 refers to the prudence in
decision-making regarding the
E use of resources to ensure that
there is minimum to zero waste

Equity
 demands that we use our natural
resources in such manner that

Enculturation
these are conserved so the next
generation will be able to use
them.
Prudence –Socialization
is tha ability
to regulate one’s actions
and behavior

Frugality- is being thrifty

with the use of one’s
resources

Enculturation
DemonstrateSocialization
the
virtues of prudence
and frugality towards
environment

Enculturation
Socialization
Erich Fromm, A German
Humanistic Philosopher,
believes that it is about
time that humanity ought to
recognize not only itself
but also the world around
it.

Enculturation
He createdSocialization
some of the
functions of his
envisioned society with
the emergence of a new
human beng that will
foster prudence and
moderation and frugality
towards environment.
Enculturation
Socialization
1. The willingness to give up
all forms of having in order
to fully be
2. Being fully present where
one is
3. Trying to reduce greed,
hate and illusions as much
as one as capable

Enculturation
Socialization
6. Freedom that is not
arbitrariness, but the
possibility to be oneself, not as
bbundle of greedy desires, but
as a delicately balance
structure that at any moment
is confronted with the
alternatives of growth or
decay, life or death

Enculturation
7. Happiness in the process of
Socialization
ever-growing aliveness
whatever the furthest point is
that fate permits one to reach,
for living as fully as one is so
satisfaction that the concern
for what one might or might
not attain has little chance to
develop

Enculturation
Socialization
8. Joy that comes from giving
and sharing, not from
hoarding and exploiting
9. Developing ones capacity
for lovr, together with ones
capacity for critical
unsentimental thought
10.Shedding ones narcissism
and accepting that tragic
limitation, inherent, in human
existence Enculturation
If all the section of
Socialization
life agree on the
same goals, the
possibility of
change would
seem to be
considerably
greater
