INTRODUCTION
• The North Atlantic Treaty
Organization is
an intergovernmental military and
political alliance between 29 North
American and European countries. NATO
constitutes a system of collective defence
whereby its independent member states
agree to mutual defense in response to an
attack by any external party.

• NATO's Headquarters:located
in Haren, Brussels, Belgium,
• Headquarters of Allied Command
Operations: is near Mons, Belgium.

Origin
• 1947 Treaty of Dunkirk was signed
by France and the United Kingdom
• 1948 Brussels treaty organization

called Washington treaty,12 members.
• NATO has added 13 new members since
the German reunification and the end of
the Cold War.
Organizational Structure
• The North Atlantic Council (NAC) has powers of
decision.
• permanent representatives or representatives at
higher level (ministers of foreign affairs or defence,
or heads of state or government).
• The NAC convenes at least once a week and takes
major decisions regarding NATO's policies.
• The meetings of the North Atlantic Council are
chaired by the Secretary General.
• Action is agreed upon on the basis of unanimity and
common accord.
NATO Headquarters

• National delegations of member countries
and includes civilian and military officers
or diplomatic missions.
• International Staff and International
Military Staff filled from serving members
of the armed forces of member states.
Military Committee
• The Military Committee (MC).
• It is composed of member states' Chiefs of
Defence (CHOD) and advises the North
Atlantic Council (NAC) on military policy
and strategy.
• The national CHODs are regularly
represented in the MC by their permanent
Military Representatives (MilRep), who
often are two- or three-star flag officers.
Allied Command Operations
• Allied Command Operations (ACO) is
the NATO command of responsible for NATO
operations worldwide.
• Allied Command
Transformation (ACT), responsible for
transformation and training of NATO forces.
• The Rapid Deployable Corps
• NATO Parliamentary Assembly sets
broad strategic goals for NATO, which meets
at two session per year.
Role during Cold war
• NATO played a role of balancer in Europe
and maintained balance of power against
Socialist Block.
• WARSA PACT
• After USSR disintegration in1991, it
played role in Bosnia and Kosovo.
After 9/11
• Role in Afghanistan.
• Training to Iraqi military
• Gulf of Aden Anti-Piracy
• Intervention in Libya 2011
