The Attitude of the
Quran and the Prophet
toward Knowledge

1. ISLAM is a religion based upon

knowledge.

2. THE QURAN is repleted with

verses inviting us to use our intellect, to
ponder, to think and to know, for the goal
of human life is to discover THE
TRUTH.
“..This Quran guides
to the right” (al-
Israa,17:9)
3. PROPHET MUHAMMAD
pbuh and other prophets were all
knowledge lovers. They urged their
people to go out and seek
KNOWLEDGE.
4. ISLAMIC CIVILIZATION
has been witness to a veritable
celebration of knowledge; The scholar
has always been held in the highest
…What about our
attitude toward
Knowledge?

…how do we use the

knowledge that we
have?

…do we really seek

knowledge for the sake
of Allah?
Ibn Sirin was among the many
scholars who said: “This knowledge is
of the religion. Be careful who you
take your religion from.”

Allah says: “Allah will exalt those who

believe among you, and those who
have knowledge, to high ranks. Allah
is well acquainted with what you do.”
[Surah al-Mujadalah: 11]

The Prophet (peace be upon him)

said: “Do not acquire knowledge in
order to vie with scholars or dispute
with the ignorant or turn people’s
glances your way. Whoever does that
What is KNOWLEDGE meant
for?

1. It is meant to be our guidance and

light
2. It is meant to be shared with
Out of the Darkness & Into
the light…

Ibn Baaz:

Upon all of the creation is the obligation to

learn and understand their religion.

Upon them is to learn that which enable them

to remove their ignorance of matters, this is
obligatory upon everyone, because you are
created to worship Allah
The Golden Ahadeeth: I

“Whenever Allah desires a

good for a person, He gives
him the understanding of
the deen”
Reported by Al-Bukhari

“Whoever treads a path seeking

knowledge, Allah will make easy
for him a path to paradise”
The Golden Ahadeeth: II

Reported by al-Bukharee, The Prophet s.a.w

said, “ The example of guidance and
knowldege with which Allah has sent me is
like abundant rain falling on the earth

fertile soil that

Some of which was
absorb the rain-water, and brought
forth vegetation and grass in abundance

was hard
(and) another portion of it
and held the rain water and Allah
benefited the people with it and they utilize it
for drinking (making their animals drink from
it), and to irrigate the land for cultivation

(and) another portion of it was barren

which could neither hold the water nor bring
forth the vegetation (then that land gave no
benefits)
..The first is the example of the person who
comprehends Allah religion and gets benefit
which Allah has revealed through me, and
learns and then teaches it to others.

The last is the example of a person who does

not care for it and does not take Allah’s
guidance revealed through me(He is like that
barren land)
…how does the brain
act toward Knowledge?
…how does the heart
act toward Knowledge?

Seek knowledge
attentively!

A student of knowledge should not let

his mind wander. Allah says: “Allah
has not assigned to any man two
hearts within his body.” [Surah al-
Ahzab: 4]
Ibn `Abbas was once asked: “How did
you acquire this knowledge that you
have?”

He replied: “With a questioning

tongue and a discerning heart.”
Be attentive, even when the topic is
one that we already well versed in.
This is one of the best manners a
student of knowledge can exhibit.

Ata’ b. Rabah said: “If I hear a

youngster relate a hadîth, I listen as if
I have no knowledge of it at all.”

He also said: “I will hear a youngster

relate a hadîth and listen to him as if I
had never heard the hadîth before,
even though the truth is I heard it
before he was born.”
…why is it still hard
then?

… balance your
knowledge with your
deeds
Abu Zakariyya al-`Anbari said:
“Having knowledge without good
manners is like having a fire without
fuel. Having manners without
knowledge is like having a body
without a soul.”

The student should approach the task

of learning one step at a time. This is
a general rule for learning. A student
who seeks to learn everything at
one’s loses everything.

“And it is a Qur’an which We have

revealed in stages so that you may
read it to the people at intervals, and
The student should strive to acquaint
himself with as much of the
knowledge of his day as he can. He
should be acquainted with all fields

Al-Ghazâlî writes in Ihyâ’ `Ulûm al-Dîn

(1/55): A student should not neglect
any respectable discipline or branch
of knowledge. He should at least be
acquainted with its general subject
and its objectives. If his lifetime
permits, he should make a detailed
study of it all.

Otherwise, he should prioritize,

dealing exhaustively with what is
most important and a making an
A scholar will benefit from a branch of
knowledge as soon as his hostility
towards it is broken because of his
unfamiliarity with it.

People are hostile to that which they

are ignorant of. Allah says: “And since
they will not be guided by it, they say:
‘This is an ancient lie’.” [Sûrah al-
