Scope:
- Develop a process to automate loading of spikes to spiker gun.
- Requires sorting of spikes from bulk random orientations to a
uniform, upright orientation.
Considerations:
- Possibility of rearranging tractor for implementation of process

  ' !
- Spikes start in bulk bin
- Spikes delivered via
existing hydraulic ram
- Quantity of spikes
delivered controlled by
surface area of ram
head
- Idea of process is to
allow the body of the
spike fall through a slot
while catching the head
 ( '
! ï

- Push bulk of spikes by

ram to fall onto slotted
channel
- Vibration and gravity
help spikes to fall into
slot
- Spikes ultimately finish
first process in upright
orientation

' !
%
- Pegs catch spikes
and rotate heads
into 3 directions
- Eliminates 1
orientation
- Prepares spikes for
following process

- A push fork is used
to push and twist the
pins in left and right
orientations
- Results in all pins
being in the down
position
 (

- Timing of Push Fork is necessary

- Multiple Push Fork mechanisms to ensure success
for process
- Requires driving of spikes through process
- Riser pad to lift head slightly off rail

- Spikes could pass

through the first
stage sort
- Resulted in non-
oriented spikes
- Yon oriented spikes
will interfere with
further processes

Failure was eliminated

- Spikes that are sorted ride channel to next process
- Unsorted spikes fall from channel to slide and back to
bulk bin

&
- Working model for
each individual
process
- Concept to be
duplicated to supply
multiple spikers
- Throughput of single
track model was ~40
spikes per minute
- Exceed Requirement
for feed rate
ï

- Twisted Vibration
slot
- Wouldn¶t rotate as
expected
- Slide and fall grove
sort
- Yo sliding nature to
geometry
&
- Utilize existing components
- Kept process as simple as possible
- Process feed has capability of exceeding
requirements
- Working model of each process built and tested
