system?

 HVDC Transmission System stands

for High Voltage Direct Current
Transmission System.
 HVDC transmission systems are
basically used to transmit DC power.
 They are capable of transmitting DC
power at high voltages and over long
distances.
WHY HAVE HVDC SYSTEMS
BECOME MORE DESIRABLE?
Environmental advantages
Economical
Asynchronous
connections
Power flow control
Highly stable
Good power quality
WORLD’S LONGEST HVDC LINK

 The longest HVDC

link in the world is
the Inga-Shaba link.
 It connects Inga dam
to Shaba copper
mine.
 It is 1700 km long.
 It has a capacity of
600MW.

COMPONENTS OF HVDC SYSTEM
CORONA DISCHARGE IN HVDC

 Corona is the ionization of air

surrounding the conductor by the
presence of a strong electric field.
 Due to this , either the positive ions or
electrons are attracted to the
conductor.
 This effect causes considerable power
losses.
 Both AC and DC transmission lines
can generate corona.
 As corona is initiated, a hissing noise is
heard and ozone gas Is formed which can
be detected by its characteristic odour.
FUTURE OF HVDC IN INDIA
• HVDC has taken INDIA’s
electricity industry by storm.
• India is one of those few countries
having a large number of HVDC
schemes in operation.
• The HVDC links which are in
progress include
I. Bishwanath to Agra
II. Madurai,India to
Anuradhapura,Sri Lanka
III.Mundra,Gujarat to Haryana.
ADVANTAGES OF HVDC
TRANSMISSION SYSTEM
 No limits in transmitted distance.
 Direction of power flow can be changed
quickly.
 Lesser corona loss compared to HVAC.
 HVDC transmissions have a high
availability
and reliability rate.
 Highly economical since extra

compensating materials are not

required.
 HVDC can carry more power for given
size of conductor.
DISADVANTAGES OF
HVDC

In HVDC, conversion , switching, control

,availability and maintenance are the most
problematic areas.
Expensive static inverters are required.
For smaller transmission distances , losses in static
inverters may be bigger than AC transmission.
Circuit breaking is difficult.
Voltage transformation is difficult.
APPLICATIONS OF HVDC
TRANSMISSION SYSTEM

 HVDC transmission systems are used for

long distance transmissions over land.
 They are widely employed for long distance
transmissions over sea as well.
 They serve as natural boundaries between
countries.
 The problem of cascade blackout can be
overcome using
HVDC transmission systems.
