V The book of Exodus consists mainly of two

genres, narrative and Laws. It was written by

Moses about 1450-1410 B.C.
V The key personalities include Moses, Miriam,
pharaoh, pharaohǯs daughter, Aaron and
Joshua. It was written to record the events of
Israelǯs deliverance from slavery in Egypt.
V Chapters 1-7 of Exodus, introduce Moses and the
Israelites in bondage in Egypt.
V God protects baby Moses and spares his life, as
Moses is adopted by Pharaohǯs daughter and is
raised as an Egyptian. God calls Moses with a
special revelation, through a burning bush to
release His people from slavery in Egypt. Moses
obeys and with his brother Aaron, confronts
Pharaoh to let Godǯs people go free, but Pharaoh
ignores the warning.
V In Chapters 7-13 Moses through the power of
God releases 10 plagues of different sorts on
the land of Egypt which included, turning all
the water to blood, plagues of insects, boils,
and hail. Finally, the death of every first-born
son, included the death of Pharaohǯs eldest
who would someday inherit the kingdom of
Egypt. However, the Israelites obeyed God
and followed the ordinance of the Passover
and God spared them.
V Chapters 14-18 describe the Exodus or
DzExitdz from Egypt. Pharaoh can no
longer endure the plagues that God
poured on Egypt and himself and
allows them to leave. Moses and the
Israelites escape making it to the Red
Sea. Shortly after, Pharaoh changes
his mind and pursues them, but God
destroys his army with the sea.
V Chapters 19-24 Moses presents all of the
Laws to all the people at Mt. Sinai as God has
commanded.
V From chapters 25-40, Moses gives the
Israelites the tabernacle, priest and worship
instructions.
V The Exodus is the miraculous death of the
enemy and the liberation of Moses and the
Israelites through an act of God. Mosesǯ
confidence in the Lord is well-founded: the
Lord did what He promised Ȃ to deliver
them from the Pharaoh.
V Through the Exodus we learn that God wants
justice and freedom for His people. We learn
that He values human beings and that He is
not indifferent when they are reduced to a
miserable state.
V The Exodus is the central event in the history
of the Israelites. Before that, they were just a
group of shepherd tribes. After they crossed
the Red Sea, they became a nation.

V Freedom is not easy to obtain. People have to
struggle and sacrifice so they can be free. The
grumblings and complaints of the people in
the desert show the universal attitude of
people who constantly criticize those who
take the initiative; of people who want
something but do not want to work to attain
what they want to have.
V The covenant shows that people must follow
rules so that they can keep their freedom.
When people keep the covenant Ȃ that is,
when they follow the Ten Commandments Ȃ
they are responding to Godǯs plan of
salvation. The Ten Commandments are
intended to form individuals who value
others and who are compassionate as God
wants people to be.
