Orang yang terkena diare, kolera dan infeksi cacing biasanya mendapatkan infeksi ini melalui
tinja, seperti halnya sampah tinja juga mengundang kedatangan lalat, dan hewan lainnya. Lalat
yang hinggap di atas tinja yang mengandung kuman kuman dapat menularkannya lewat
makanan yang dihinggapinya. Bila orang berak di dekat sungai atau sumber air lainnya maka air
tersebut akan tercemar.

Syarat Kakus yang benar :

 Terletak di dataran rendah dan jarak kurang lebih 20 meter dari

sumber air (sungai, sumur, mata air, danau, kolam dan sebagainya).
 Tandon penampung tinja sedalam kurang lebih 1 meter.
 Mempunyai penutup yang terbuat dari bahan yang kuat seperti
beton atau kayu, dan penutup ini mempunyai lubang yang
memungkinkan tinja dan air dapat melewatinya ke bawah secara
mudah.
 Mempuyai dinding dan atap yang terbuat daari bahan yang mudah
didapatkan, murah dan mudah pula diperbaiki.
 Dijaga kebersihannya, sediakan ember dan sapu dalam kakus.
 Ciri ciri sebuah kakus yang digunakan secara baik :

1. Semua anggota keluarga menggunakannya.

2. Kebersihan selalu dijaga yaitu lantai dan dinding penutup kakusnya selalu dicuci setiap kali dipakai.

3. Lubang kakus selalu ditutup bila kakus tersebut sedang tidak digunakan.

4. Bahan bahan yang dibutuhkan untuk membersihkan diri selalu tersedia setiap saat, misalnya air, tissue,
sabun dan gayung.

5. Tandon kakus dapat dikosongkan bila tinja di dalamnya sudah penuh atau tandon berikutnya dapat
dibuat bila tandon pertama penuh.
