w A network is a collection of computers and

devices interconnected by communications

channels that facilitate communications among
users and allow users to share resources.

w networking is the construction, design,

and use of a network, including the physical
(cabling, hub, bridge, switch, router, and so forth),
the selection and use of telecommunication protocol
and computer software for using and managing the
network, and the establishment of operation policies
and procedures related to the network.

½ is a group of computers and other devices (such as
printers) that are connected together by a common
medium, generally copper wire but can also be wireless.

½ As a general rule, a LAw will cover a total distance no

less than one-half mile with the distance between any
two devices being no more than 60 feet.

½ The current transmission speed of data along a LAw

generally runs from 10Mbps to 100Mps (i.e. 1Gbps) is
becoming popular.
w w
½ more commonly known as Wi-i (short for wireless
fidelity) is exactly the same as LAw but different in
regards to medium for it does not require wired cable
connections.
½ Many airports, hotels, and fast-food facilities offer public
access to Wi-i networks. These locations are known as
Ô . An interconnected area of hot spots and
network access points is known as a Ô .
w
   w
½ A is one that has a physical distance limit of
roughly 30 miles.
½ MAw uses the topologies described for LAw. MAw does
not use public telephone system to transfer data just like
LAw. Transfer rate are usually at 100Mps to 1Gbps.
w w
½ on the other hand is used to connect computers and
other devices when the distance exceeds constraints of
LAws and MAws. This network uses the public
telephone system, but since the revolution of the
d the use of WAw has slowly declined.
ww
½ The Internet is a global system of interconnected
governmental, academic, corporate, public, and private
computer networks.
½ The Internet is also the communications backbone
underlying the World Wide Web (WWW).
½ wwu organizations can limit access to their
networks to other members of their organization by
using an intranet. Intranet uses the same network
protocols as the Internet but limits accessibility to
computer resources to a select group of persons in the
organizations

include users beyond the business firm it is
called extranet.
Today, the ig 3 automakers, Chrysler Corp., General
Motors Corp., and ord Motor Co. are building a
collaborative extranet that links them to their
suppliers through designated ISPs via a managed,
virtual private network (VPw) called the Automotive
wetwork eXchange (AwX).
