Lord Ripon (1827-1909) Governor


General and Viceroy of India (1880-
1884). Rippon tried to heal the
wounds of India and adopted
several positive and constructive
measures in order to do some good
to the Indians. India was in a state
of revolution-political, social and
religious, when Lord Rippon came
to India.

Vernacular Press Act Index

Act III of 1882 repealed the horrible Vernacular Press Act of 1878.
Through this act the newspaper was given the equal freedom with the
rest of the Indian Press. his wise action of Rippon tried to undo the
wrong done by Lytton and went a long way in conciliating the public
opinion.

The Vernacular Press Act Index

The Vernacular Press Act was passed in 1878 under the


Governor Generalship and Viceroyalty of Lord Lytton, for ‘better control”
of Indian language newspapers. The purpose of the Act was to control
the printing and circulation of seditious material, calculated to produce
disaffection against the British Government in India in the minds of the
ignorant, uneducated and largely illiterate masses.

During his reign, the Parliament passed the Royal Titles


Act conferring upon Queen Victoria the title of 'Empress of
India';
He was the founder of the Mohammedan Anglo-Oriental
College, Aligarh was laid in 1877
 Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-1880)
wered the age of candidates giving the I.C.S. examination
to 19 years
 Famine Committee under Gen. Richard Stratchey was
appointed (1878).
