£ Pesticides may reach the adjoining water
bodies through runoff and adversely affect
the aquatic organism including the fish
£ ccidental or mal-intentional poisoning of
fish ponds is also reported
£ Pesticides cause extensive damage to
fishery ponds due to large scale fish mortally
and incurring huge financial loss to the
farmers
£ Pesticides affect vital organs and endocrine
glands of Fish
£ hlorpyrifos, an organophosphate
pesticide is one of the most preferred
insecticides in use, because of its
effectiveness against insect and low
mammalian toxicity
£ hlorpyrifos is very toxic to fish

he were sawdust, peat, lignite coal, oconut shell,
coconut husk, old automobile tires, rice bran and

£ he experiments were carried out at same
parameters. t four different
concentrations of chlorpyrifos (equivalent
to 24, 48, 72 and 96 h L values) i.e.
2.4, 2., 2.27 and 2.17 mg/L, small
pieces of banana trunk, in measured
quantity, were mixed and six fishes were
exposed to this solution
£ No mortality occurred at any concentration
of chlorpyrifos solution containing banana
pieces
£ he concentration was further raised to
twice of 24 h L (i.e. 2.4 mg/L) with
same amount of banana pieces and no
mortality in fish could be recorded even at
this concentration
£ hese results show that the fish mortality
was drastically reduced in the chlorpyrifos
solution containing banana trunk
£ Banana may be acting as chelating agent
or working as an adsorbent of the
pesticide, therefore, effectively reducing
the lethality and thus the mortality

£ he study may further be extended to

explore the therapeutic property of banana
to use it against accidental poisoning of
fish ponds.
