INTRODUCTION

 What is a 3D Display?
 3-D DISPLAY : A display describing the properties of an image
as human eye can recognize the basic parameters of the image viz.
height, width and depth.

 Is it necessary of a screen to display an image or a scene ?

 No screen is required now as we can project the image in mid-air
creating a virtual screen in the atmosphere.
DISPLAY TECHNOLOGY

 Stereoscopic and autostereoscopic displays

 Head-mounted displays
 Volumetric displays
 Large translucent displays
 Immaterial displays
STEREOSCOPIC AND AUTOSTEREOSCOPIC DISPLAYS

 Stereoscopic displays provide

slightly different images for
the left and right eye.
 Tracking of the user is not
necessary but the correct
viewing perspective is
restricted, and user-worn
glasses are required.
 Autostereoscopic displays
require no special glasses or
other user-worn devices
HEAD-MOUNTED DISPLAYS

 Displays virtual images directly in

front of the user’s eyes.

 Correct point of view for the user.

 Different left and right images for

stereo separation effects, but focal
length remains constant across the
entire image.

 Collaboration requires each user

wear separate display hardware.
VOLUMETRIC DISPLAYS

 These displays all create their 3D

imagery in a fairly small enclosed
volume that the viewer cannot
enter.

 More suited for computer

graphics than video applications.

 A real 3D image is generated by

drawing 2D images on a quickly
rotating screen to fill the entire
volume swept out by its path.
LARGE TRANSLUCENT DISPLAYS

 Screens consist of an acrylic

plate that is coated with a
holographic film

 Make the screen practically

transparent from the viewer’s
point of view, showing only
projected objects

 Inherent single sidedness

a dream from “star wars” movies
FogScreen technology
-Display image in fog
WORKING OF FOGSCREEN DISPLAY

FogScreen, an “immaterial” indoor 2D

projection screen, which enables high-quality
projected images in free space.

Fog Screen creates an image in midair by

employing a large, non-turbulent airflow to
protect the dry fog generated within from
turbulence.

The result is a thin, stable sheet of fog,

sandwiched between two layers of air, on which
an image can be projected and even walked
through.
PSEUDO 3D EFFECT
IO2 TECHNOLOGY - HELIODISPLAY
APPROACHING BY MIRAGE PHENOMENA

The Heliodisplay creates a similar effect

as fogscreen display, but, instead of fog,
it uses a cloud of microscopic particles.

Mirages are actual meteorological

phenomena created by the refraction of
light through different densities of air.
Normally these different densities
are caused by different temperatures.
HOW IT WORK?

Air is drawn in

A cloud of microscopic particles is

created

Cloud of microscopic particles is

ejected

so as to create a 3D screen

Digital projector unit illuminates the

particle cloud

creating a visible image

MERITS :
 Easily viewed in an office environment.
 Heliodisplay images appear 3D, even though in fact, the images are
planar.
 Viewing requires no special glasses or background/foreground
screening.
 It is initiative to HAPTIC technology.

DEMERIT
S
: Viewing a Heliodisplay image in direct sunlight is almost
impossible.
It is very cost effective.
APPLICATIONS

 Advertising and Promotion

 Collaborative Decision Making

 Simulation & Training

 Consumer

 Heads-up displays in new fields

 Build the Heliodisplay into furniture

CONCLUSION
 In developing a fully volumetric 3D display, the use of multiple FogScreens in
various configurations to allow images to occupy a tangible physical volume
surrounding the user.

 The implemented system enables one to view 3D objects in mid-air and

observe them from almost any angle. Using it as an immaterial, head-tracked
dual-sided display, has led to an enhanced visualization experience. It creates a
strong visual effect of 3D objects floating in air, even when the image is not
stereoscopic.

 In improving the sense of presence of virtual objects in the physical world by

integrating haptic feedback into the interface.
