Tanah dan Batuan

Pengantar Ilmu Mekanika Tanah

 Pendahuluan
.

Dalam pengertian teknik secara umum, tanah didefinisikan sebagai material yang
terdiri dari agregat (butiran) mineral-mineral padat yang tidak tersementasi (terikat
secara kimia) satu sama lain dari bahan-bahan organik yang telah melapuk (yang
berpartikel padat) disertai dengan zat cair dan gas yang mengisi ruang-ruang
kosong di antara partikel-partikel padat tersebut.

Seorang ahli teknik sipil harus juga mempelajari sifat-sifat dasar dari tanah, seperti
asal usulnya, penyebaran ukuran butiran, kemampuan mengalirkan air, sifat
pemampatan bila dibebani (compressibility),kekuatan geser, kapasitas daya dukung
terhadap beban dan lain-lain.
 Tanah
Secara umum tanah didefinisikan sebagai material yang terdiri dari agregat
(butiran) mineral-mineral padat yang tidak tersementasi (terikat secara kimia)
satu sama lain dan dari bahan-bahan organik yang telah melapuk (yang
berpartikel padat) disertai dengan zat cair dan gas yang mengisi ruang ruang
kosong di antara partike-partikel padat tersebut.

Tanah berguna sebagai bahan bangunan pada berbagai macam pekerjaan

teknik sipil, disamping itu tanah juga berfungsi sebagai pendukung pondasi
pada bangunan. Jadi seorang ahli teknik sipil harus juga mempelajari sifat-sifat
dasar dari tanah, seperti asal usulnya, penyebaran ukuran butiran, kemampuan
mengalirkan air (permeability), sifat pemampatan bila dibebani (compressibility),
kekuatan geser, kapasitas daya dukun (bearing capacity) dan lainnya.
 Tanah umunya dapat disebut sebagai kerikil (gravel), pasir (sand), lanau
(silt) atau lempung (clay), tergantung pada ukuran partikel yang paling
dominan pada tanah tersebut.
• Kerikil (gravels) adalah kepingan-kepingan dari batuan yang kadang-kadang juga mengandung
partikel-partikel mineral quartz, feldspar dan mineral-mineral lain, Diameter butiran > 5 mm

• Pasir (sand) sebagian besar terdiri dari mineral quartz dan feldspar. Butiran dari mineral yang lain
mungkin juga masih ada pada golongan ini , Diameter butiran 0,0075 – 5,0 mm.

• Lanau (silt) sebagian besar merupakan fraksi mikroskopis dari tanah yang terdiri dari butiran-
butiran quartz yang sangat halus, dan sejumlah partikel-partikel berbentuk lempengan pipih yang
merupakan pecahan dari mineral-mineral mika, Diameter butiran 0,002 – 0,0075 mm.

• Lempung (clays) sebagian besar terdiri dari partikel mikroskopis dan submikroskopis (tidak dapat
dilihat dengan jelas bila hanya dengan mikroskopis biasa) yang berbentuk lempengan-lempengan
pipih dan merupakan partikel-partikel dari mika. Lempung didefinisikan sebagai golongan partikel
yang berukuran kurang dari 0,002 mm (= 2 mikron)
 Asal-usul Tanah

Tanah merupakan hasil pelapukan batuan dengan bantuan organisme.

Dikelompokkan dalam 2 grup besar, yaitu :

a. Tanah yang terjadi oleh penumpukan produk pelapukan batuan ditempat

asalnya : tanah residu = residual soils
b. Tanah yang terjadi oleh produk pelapukan yang kemudian terbawa ke tempat
lain : tanah sedimen = transported soils

(di pantai/air laut).
