Roads in Seoul, the manholes and drains often become a source of odor

complaints. Therefore, the city government is trying to reduce the odor
emission from the sewer system. One option the city is considering now
is to apply a chemical to the sewer system.
Although there are numerous vendors which sell deodorants for sewer
systems, few studies have been done to objectively and systematically
evaluate the effectiveness of the deodorants. Most
studies simply collected gas samples from a manhole or a drain and
analyzed several volatile organic carbons or dilution factors before and
after a deodorant were sprayed. Since odor e missions are spontaneous
and are affected by a number of environmental conditions, the
effectiveness of a deodorant may not be properly evaluated with one or
two gas samplings and analyses. Fig. 2. TRS analyzer
In this study, we installed an on-line total reduced sulfur (TRS)analyzer

One thing mentionable is that if we collected gas samples from the
manhole from time to time for normal instrumental and olfactometric
analyses we could not observe the periodical peaks that we did using the

A commercial deodorant containing phytoncide as a deodorant was
applied to the sewer line of the site. To evaluate the effectiveness of the
deodorant, the odor from the sewer line was first monitored from Jan. 6th è

to Jan 8th before the deodorant was applied. The mean atmospheric
temperature was -1.1 º . The gas from the sewer line was also
continuously monitored from Feb. 6th through Feb. 16th. The mean In this study, we evaluated the effectiveness of a commercial deodorant

wastewater from building pits. In addition, the TRS profiles did show
clearly that the deodorant was not effective in reducing sewer odor.
