m The m m is a dam on the Narmada River near Navagam,
Gujarat, India.
m The dam is the largest dam in and part of the Narmada Valley Project, a
large hydraulic engineering project involving the construction of a series of
large irrigation and hydroelectric multi purpose dams on the Narmada River.
m The project was first conceived of in the 1940s by the country's first prime
minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.
m Of the thirty large dams planned on river Narmada, Sardar Sarovar Dam
(SSD) is the largest structure to be built.
m It has a proposed final height of 136.5 m (448 ft). The project will irrigate
more than 18,000 km2 (6,900 sq mi), most of it in drought prone areas of
Kutch and Saurashtra.
m Critics maintain that its negative environmental impacts outweigh its
benefits. It has created discord between its government planners and the
citizens group Narmada Bachao Andolan.

G
m Major river valley projects are known to have
large-scale impacts on the physical and biological
environment . Direct impacts are felt in four broad
regions:
1. upstream of the dam (submergence and
catchment areas);
2. downstream of the dam (riverine and estuarine
ecosystems);
3. command area (canal impact region);
4. areas away from the above three regions where
project-related activities are carried out (e.g.
resettlement areas).
G
m Any proposed river valley project go through three steps
regarding these environmental impacts:

9
 A complete environmental impact analysis
should be conducted before the project is considered for
clearance, and the results of the analysis be used for
judging the viability and desirability of the project.

 If the
project is considered viable and desirable on social,
economic, environmental, and technical grounds, it is
necessary to take preventive and ameliorative measures
related to the negative environmental impacts. This requires
complete workplans and their implementation.

 once the project is built, it
is important to constantly monitor the environmental
impacts, and the measures taken to address them.
