How do you summarize 4 days of

J2J into 1 or 2 hours?

You squeeze REALLY hard
Today
• Methods of adult learning
• Becoming a teacher
• Some thoughts about what you might do
• Story ideas & topics
Not everything we discuss
right now will work for you

But I hope it will give you a head

start on thinking about how to
help your colleagues
Methods of Adult Learning
• Adults are Learner Directed
• if they understand why they need the information and
skills you are teaching them, they are more likely to
remember and utilize them.

• McCain DV, Creating Training Courses (When You're Not a Trainer). Alexandria, VA: ASTD Press, 1999.

Adults are Experiential …

• … meaning they learn more by doing and applying and want active
involvement in their learning.

• McCain DV, Creating Training Courses (When You're Not a Trainer). Alexandria, VA: ASTD Press, 1999.
• curriculum must be …

…inclined to evaluation.
• You should clearly specify what you want students to take away from
each concept you teach.

• McCain DV, Creating Training Courses (When You're Not a Trainer). Alexandria, VA: ASTD Press, 1999.
• teaching should be

based on
prior knowledge.
Since adult learners can oftentimes bring years of experience to the table,

• it is important to build off of existing knowledge as opposed to plying them with random, unsubstantiated
facts.

• McCain DV, Creating Training Courses (When You're Not a Trainer). Alexandria, VA: ASTD Press, 1999.
• curriculum should incorporate

• numerous teaching methods.

• Some adults learn best from lectures while others are more visual learners.
• In order to support all learning styles, and keep everyone engaged, trainers
must be sure to integrate a variety of mediums in the curriculum

• McCain DV, Creating Training Courses (When You're Not a Trainer). Alexandria, VA: ASTD Press, 1999.
You may want to add your own
touches back home
• Hand out information
• Bring in a qualified & sympathetic person
to assist you
• Use videos, etc.

• The idea is that everyone in front

of you will want to learn
Create a Learning Climate

• Tell them how you learned this material

and the difference it has made in your
work
• Welcome questions at all times
• Let them know you care about the subject
and you care about them

Port-de-Paix, Haiti, Août 2007
Because of your
J2J training

You are a teacher

Teachers lead

So lead them
First,

• Remember that your j2j and IAC

experiences will have focused on the BIG
picture
• So, make sure you’re up to speed on your
local situation
Here are some sources
for local statistics
www.globalhealthfacts.org

www.iasociety.org

www.kff.org

www.unaids.org

www.aidstruth.org

www.prb.org/

Your local and national health agencies

Become familiar with ALL of them
• Because they can provide the kind of solid
information that will support all of your
reporting and newsroom teaching
Some thoughts about what you
might do …
Let them direct you. Ask …

Do you have any

questions?
What’s What
the right are
language
to use? ARVs?

What did you

learn in
Cape Town?
On the basis of their questions,
you’ll know which direction to
take.
And if they have no questions,
you can propose a few …
Story Ideas 1

– How do people who are HIV+ feel about

the word “victim”?
– Should sex workers be regulated?
– Do we identify someone who is HIV+?
– Can we follow an HIV+ person as he/she
attempts to get medicine?
Story Ideas 2
• Why are men reluctant to use condoms?
• What can we tell readers/viewers about a
female condom?
• How do we report on MSM?
• How do we deal with denialists?
Story Ideas 3
• What research into HIV/AIDS is being done here in
…?
• What is the stress on health professionals, like
nurses, as they deal with people who are HIV+
and there is no money.

• How do families talk about HIV/AIDS?

– To prevent it
– If someone is living with it
Story Ideas 4
• Why is it taking so long to develop a cure for those
who have AIDS?
• Will there ever be a vaccine against HIV?
• Do we have an ethical obligation to cover HIV/AIDS?
• The co-infection of HIV/AIDS & TB…

• There are dozens of others …

Here are some tips I
learned the hard way…
I’m sure you have your own …
Approach topics through
people
VULNERABLE PEOPLE
• Women
– Especially in male-dominant cultures
– In war zones
– Sex workers
• Children
– students
• Medical workers
• Men in risky relationships
China
People in Groups
• Local communities
• National defense
• Migrant workers
• Agriculture
• Education
Brazil
India

• Most HIV+ people don’t

know they are infected
Orphans

• 14 million globally
– Over 12 million in Africa
Expand the subject
If one AIDS orphan is bad, what will
many do to society?

– Over 40 million
projected by the year
2015.
Show how HIV/AIDS affects other
aspects of life
…like business
or other health issues

Tuberculosis

• Kills over 2 million

people each year

• 25% of all TB deaths

are HIV-related
If you are talking about
transmission …

• Unprotected sexual contact

• IV drug use
• Unsafe clinical environment
• Mother-to-child transmission
Give the important news
about prevention
• Condoms – male or female
• Microbicides
• Limited sexual partners
• Clean needles
• Preventing mother-to-child transmission
• Sterile clinical environments
• male circumcision, for adults
China
You colleagues will want your
guidance on language …
Remember the glossary from
UNAIDS in the front of your j2j
folder
HIV/AIDS is many things…
• Science, medicine, society,
behavior, lifestyles …

• But above all it is a story of

people
Interview a person,
not a statistic

• Radio reporter
from Romania
had written about
AIDS for years &
never spoken
directly to HIV+
person before

• J2J photo, Toronto, 2006

And enrich that story with
science or data
As you see what works, tell us, so
we can squeeze 4 days of learning
into just a few hours, too!
