LEED NEW CONSTRUCTION CHECKLIST SUSTAINABLE SITES

LEED NEW CONSTRUCTION CHECKLIST SUSTAINABLE SITES

Prerequisite 1: Construction Activity Pollution Prevention
This prerequisite is intended to limit the amount of erosion, dust and water sedimentation created by construction activities.

LEED NEW CONSTRUCTION CHECKLIST SUSTAINABLE SITES

Prerequisite 1: Construction Activity Pollution Prevention
During construction, there can be a lot of pollution going on, especially when it rains. Pollution on construction sites can be reduced by controlling: Soil Erosion Airborne Dust Generation Waterway Sedimentation Implementation

LEED NEW CONSTRUCTION CHECKLIST SUSTAINABLE SITES

Prerequisite 1: Construction Activity Pollution Prevention
Provide ESC (Erosion and Sedimentation Control) plan with construction documents and specifications. Goal is to prevent the loss of soil, pollution, and sedimentation. Follow the EPA 2003 (Environmental Protection Agency) standards. CGP (Construction General Permit) outlines how to comply with NPDES program. CGP covers sites greater than 1 acre, but LEED covers all.

Prerequisite 1: Construction Activity Pollution Prevention
Ways to control sedimentation: Stabilization: i.e. seeding and mulching Structural: i.e. silt fences, earth dikes, sediment traps

LEED NEW CONSTRUCTION CHECKLIST SUSTAINABLE SITES

Credit 1: Site Selection (1pt)
Intent: Develop sites that are already previously developed. Avoid developing inappropriate sites.

LEED NEW CONSTRUCTION CHECKLIST SUSTAINABLE SITES

Credit 1: Site Selection (1pt)
Forbidden Sites: Below 5ft. above the 100 year flood elevation as defined by FEMA Within 100ft. of Wetlands as defined by CFR (Code of Federal Regulations) Prime farmland as defined by USDA Within 50ft. of a water body (lakes, seas, rivers, etc.) Comply with Clean Water Act. Habitat for any endangered or critical species. Public parkland (Park Authority projects are exempt)

LEED NEW CONSTRUCTION CHECKLIST SUSTAINABLE SITES

Credit 1: Site Selection (1pt)
Forbidden Sites: Anything less than 5ft. above the 100 year flood elevation as defined by FEMA What this means: A site plan must be submitted that shows that you are at least 5 above the 100 year flood line if either of those lines cross the site. If neither line crosses the site, indicate the nearest USGS elevation contour line.

Credit 2: Development Density & Community Connectivity (5pts)
The intent of this credit is to develop in areas that have existing infrastructure, and preserve natural habitat.

Option 1: Previously developed site in a community with a density of 60,000sf per acre net. Option 2: Previously developed site within 1/2 mile of a residential zone with 10 units per acre and 1/2 mile from basic services.

LEED NEW CONSTRUCTION CHECKLIST SUSTAINABLE SITES

Credit 3: Brownfield Redevelopment (1pt)
Rehabilitate existing damaged/contaminated sites.

LEED NEW CONSTRUCTION CHECKLIST SUSTAINABLE SITES

Credit 4.1: Alternative Transportation: Public Transportation Access (6pts)
Reduce automobile use to help reduce pollution.

Locate the project within 1/2 mile of some sort of light rail system or 1/4 mile away from one or more bus stops that are for 2 or more bus lines.

Credit 4.2: Alternative Transportation: Bicycle Storage & Changing Rooms (1pt)
Reduce the pollution caused by automobile use. Bike Racks - within 200 yards of entrance Bike Racks - for 5% of all building users Showers - for 0.5% of all FTE occupants Residential - bike racks for 15% of occupants

LEED NEW CONSTRUCTION CHECKLIST SUSTAINABLE SITES

Credit 4.3: Alternative Transportation: Low Emission & Fuel Efficient Vehicles (3pts)
The intent of this credit is to reduce the environmental impact caused by automobile use. Option 1: Provide low emitting or fuel efficient vehicles for 3% of FTE occupants & preferred parking Option 2: Preferred parking for low-emitting vehicles for 5% of parking capacity Option 3: Alternate fuel refueling stations for 3% of parking capacity

LEED NEW CONSTRUCTION CHECKLIST SUSTAINABLE SITES

Credit 4.3: Alternative Transportation: Parking Capacity (2pts)
Reduce the environmental impact caused by vehicle use Option 1: Parking size not to exceed minimum needed & 5% for car/vanpools (non-residential) Option 2: Projects that have parking for < 5% & for car/vanpools (non-residential) Option 3: No more than minimum needed & carpooling (residential)

LEED NEW CONSTRUCTION CHECKLIST SUSTAINABLE SITES

Credit 5.1: Site Development: Protect or Restore Habitat (1pt)
Promote biodiversity by conserving existing natural areas and or restoring damaged areas.
These practices involve protecting greenfield sites, restoring previously developed sites including the possible use of a vegetated roof.

LEED NEW CONSTRUCTION CHECKLIST SUSTAINABLE SITES

Credit 5.2: Site Development: Maximize Open Space (1pt)
Promote biodiversity & recreation by providing a high amount of open vegetative space to development footprint.
There are 3 options that all involve either reducing the buildings footprint or increasing the amount of vegetated or open space.
