Tumbuhan yang telah diidentifikasi dan
diketahui berdasarkan pengamatan manusia
memiliki senyawa yang bermanfaat untuk
mencegah dan menyembuhkan penyakit,
melakukan fungsi biologis tertentu, hingga
mencegah serangan serangga dan jamur.

 Orang-orang yang bijaksana sering
mengatakan bahwa "kesehatan adalah harta
yang paling berharga dalam hidup ini". Sehat
dan bugar adalah dua kunci yang sebaiknya
dimiliki oleh setiap orang agar hidup ini
menjadi lebih bermakna. Untuk
mewujudkannya antara lain dapat kita lakukan
melalui pengaturan makanan (Astawan, 2011).

 Sejarah
● Sejak zaman prasejarah, rempah-rempah pada awalnya digunakan sebagai bumbu
penyedap makanan, tetapi perlahan diketahui memiliki beragam manfaat.
● Terutama rempah-rempah yang memiliki kemampuan antimikroba sehingga dapat
mengawetkan makanan.
● Berbagai bukti arkeologis menemukan bahwa manusia menggunakan tumbuhan obat
setidaknya sejak zaman Paleolitikum
● Dalam sejarah tertulis, setidaknya setudi mengenai rempah daun telah dilakukan
sejak 5000 tahun lalu di Sumeria, dan tertulis di tablet tanah liat yang memuat daftar
ratusan tumbuhan obat. Pada tahun 1500 SM bangsa Mesir Kuno menulis Papirus
Eber yang berisi lebih dari 800 tumbuhan obat, termasuk di antaranya bawang putih
dan mariyuana.

 Fitokimia
Semua tumbuhan menghasilkan senyawa kimia sebagai bagian dari aktivitas
metabolisme. Senyawa fitokimia ini dibagi menjadi beberapa jenis:

● Metabolit primer seperti gula dan lemak yang ditemukan di seluruh jenis
tumbuhan.
● Metabolit sekunder yang tidak ditemukan di semua jenis tumbuhan, dan
setiap jenis tumbuhan dapat memiliki jenis dan fungsi metabolit sekunder
yang berbeda-beda

 Metabolit Sekunder
Contoh metabolit sekunder yaitu toksin yang digunakan untuk melawan
predator dan feromon yang digunakan untuk menarik perhatian serangga untuk
melakukan penyerbukan. Metabolit sekunder inilah yang banyak digunakan
sebagai obat-obatan pada manusia, seperti inulin dari akar dahlia sebagai media
penyimpanan energi digunakan manusia untuk pengobatan ginjal; kuinina dari
kina menghasilkan rasa pahit sehingga mencegah tumbuhan dimakan
herbivora, pada manusia dijadikan obat malaria; dan morfin dari lateks opium
merupakan pertahanan ketika biji opium yang sedang berkembang diserang,
oleh manusia dijadikan bahan obat-obatan.

 Metabolit Sekunder
● Alkaloid merupakan senyawa kimia yang memiliki cincin nitrogen.
Alkaloid dihasilkan dari berbagai jenis organisme dari bakteri hingga
animalia. Alkaloid dapat dimurnikan dengan menggubakan ekstraksi asam-
basa. Berbagai alkaloid bersifat toksik bagi organisme lain. Contoh alkaloid
adalah kafeina. Secara umum alkaloid memiliki rasa pahit.
● Polifenol adalah senyawa yang mengandung cincin fenol. Contoh polifenol
yaitu antosianin yang memberi warna ungu pada anggur, tannin yang
memberi rasa pada teh, dan isoflavon dari kedelai.

 Uji Klinis

Berbagai rempah daun memiliki efek positif ketika

diuji secara in-vitro, pada hewan, dan uji klinis skala
kecil, namun tidak jarang beberapa tumbuhan obat
memiliki efek negatif.
Pada tahun 2002, National Institutes of Health mulai
membiayai uji klinis terhadap efektivitas obat herbal.

 Uji Klinis

Survey pada tahun 2010 terhadap 1000 jenis tumbuhan, 356 di

antaranya telah memiliki hasil uji klinis mengenai manfaatnya
secara farmakologi. Sekitar 12 persen dikatakan "tidak memiliki
manfaat yang signifikan" meski telah tersedia di pasar herbal
karena tidak memasukkan pengetahuan historis yang dapat
memberikan informasi mengenai dosis optimal, spesies yang
detail, waktu pemanenan, dan target populasi penerima obat.
