Describe what is keyboard

Most of the computer data is entered through the keyboards. In earlier time, keyboards were connected to a punching machine. Pressing of a key is used to result in making holes in the cards, called punched cards. These punched cards were then inserted into the computer. This type of the input system in which the input device is not directly connected to a computer is called off-line. Nowadays keyboards are directly attached to the computers. The data is therefore directly fed to the computer. The system where the input device is attached to the computer is called an online system. Earlier keyboards used to have less than 60 keys. But nowadays keyboards with over 100 keys is common. These keys can be grouped according their functions. All alphabets a to z can be typed using these keys and upper case letter can be typed by using the shift key or by using the caps lock keys. Decimal numbers are often available twice on the keyboards. The keyboard has a separate block of keys representing numbers that can be used for calculation. Some keys with specific functions are provided like Home and End keys allow users to move instantly to the beginning or the end of a stored document.

Functionalities of keyboards

The computer takes a familiar tool like a keyboard and empowers it with useful additions and functions. Although a computer keyboard is based on the old typewriter layout, there are some major differences in the ways that keys are used. Computer keyboards also have additional keys. Learning to use the unique keys and special functions of the computer keyboard can save you time and make you more comfortable with your computer. Function Keys (Fkeys) Most computer keyboards have a row of function keys at the top of the keyboard. These keys are marked F1 through F10 or F12. While they were widely used with older DOS programs, they are not as popular today. However many programs, including most of Microsoft's products, support use of the function keys. As a throwback to DOS days, you will find that the F1 key often will bring up a help menu. The function keys are frequently used in combination with other keys such as the CTRL key, the ALT key, and the Shift key. These combinations result in a plethora of possible keyboard shortcuts. Look in the help menu of the program that you are using to find a list of the function keys and their uses.

Types of Computer Keyboards

This article seeks to explain the different types of computer keyboards such as gaming keyboards, laptop keyboards, ergonomic keyboards, thumbsize keyboards, numeric keyboards and others. There are also other types of computer keyboards, such as foldable keyboards, laser/infrared keyboards and chorded keyboards. Keyboards also connect with different ports such as PS/2, USB and others.

Gaming Keyboards
Gaming keyboards are similar to normal keyboards except they generally contain extra features such as illuminated keys, multimedia keys, an additional LCD screen, palm rest and other features. Illuminated keyboards are useful for playing games, during the night, when it's too dark to see the keyboard normally. The multimedia keys are also useful for adjusting the volume, for changing the music tracks and for doing other things, while continually playing your game.

Laptop Keyboards

The laptop computer keyboard is a small version of the typical QWERTY keyboard. A typical laptop has the same keyboard type as a normal keyboard, except for the fact that most laptop keyboards condense the symbols into fewer buttons to accomodate less space. There are also often extra keys such as power buttons, volume buttons, play buttons, rewind buttons, mute buttons and others.

Ergonomic Computer Keyboards

Ergonomic computer keyboards is a computer keyboard designed with ergonomic considerations to minimize muscle strain and a host of related problems. An ergomic keyboard is designed to make typing easier and lessen the strain that your hands may suffer, such as "Carpal Tunnel Syndrome". I recently bought an ergonomic keyboard, the same design as the one on the right and it has decreased the strain and improved my typing skill and speed. I highly recommend that you look at buying an ergonomic keyboard.

Rollup Keyboards

Rollup computer keyboards are extremely good for travelling. Simply roll them up and then unroll them when you need them again. Typically the material is either silicone or polyurethane. These devices are meant to be rolled up, rather than folded, as folding can damage the circuitry. I think these can be cool as a gadget, or for someone that is moving around a lot, but for the typical user is probably not a necessity.
