An Ounce of Prevention
As teachers, we set the tone for the classroom: Authority Attitude Assertiveness Preparation Confidence Clear Expectations Self-Control Empathize like a child, respond as an adult.
Set clear boundaries Simple rules Few rules (5 max) Involve students in process (feedback, discussion, examples) Set clear consequences Stick to it! Be fair
Always look for opportunities to praise your students! (individually) Whatever gets attention, will increase. Negative attention is better than no attention. Whatever is true, whatever is right, Whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, Whatever is admirable, -if anything is Excellent or praise worth think about such things.
Consequences should be immediate and logically related to the mis-behaviour. Talking with friend: move to another seat. Make a mess: clean it up. Put down : say something positive about the other person. Always try to connect the childs choice. To misbehave with a choice to accept the consequences.
emphasize the impact of a warning. Maintain eye contact. Say the childs name. Lean forward. Speak slowly and clearly. Lower the pitch of your voice. Move slowly. Hand on shoulder or back.
If possible give a child options to choose from. You can play game with the group, or you can sit on the side bench. Helps child build a sense of responsibility over his/ her own actions.
