What is wireless???????????

Wireless communication is the transfer of information over a distance without the use of electrical conductors or "wires". The distances involved may be short (a few meters as in television remote control) or long (thousands or millions of kilometers for radio communications). When the context is clear, the term is often shortened to "wireless".

Why Deploy Wireless?

Can not run wire to locations needed. Cost savings over wireline. To enable patrons to bring their own
laptop, therefore reducing the cost of owning many PCs. To enable you to easily move PCs. To be on the leading edge.

Types of wireless technologies:1) Bluetooth 2) Wi-Fi 3) WiMax

What's????????????

Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and WiMax are wireless technologies which allow devices to inter-connect and communicate with each other. Radio waves are electromagnetic waves and have different frequencies. These technologies are radio frequencies. Similar to the analogue radio or fm-radio
.

Work Range..
Bluetooth works - 2.45ghz frequency Wi-fi works - 2.4ghz and 5ghz. WiMax works - 2 to 11ghz and 10 to 66ghz

Bluetooth

It was Named after the Danish king, Harol Bluetooth. Due to its low cost, manufacturers are willing to implement this technology in most devices. It consumes less power and are suited for very small battery powered devices and portable device. Bluetooth allows for a wireless Personal Area Network (PAN) with it's short range

Cont.

Bluetooth exists in many products, such as telephones, modems and headsets. The technology is useful when transferring information between two or more devices that are near each other in low-bandwidth situations. Bluetooth is commonly used to transfer sound data with telephones (i.e. with a Bluetooth headset) or byte data with hand-held computers (transferring files).

Uses:

Bluetooth is a standard and communications protocol primarily designed for low power consumption, with a short range based on lowcost transceiver microchips in each device. Bluetooth enables these device to communicate with each other when they are in range. The devices uses radio communications system so they don't have to be in line of sight each other and can be even in other rooms as long as the received transmission is powerful enough.

Applications:

Wireless control of and communication between a mobile phone and a hands-free are prevalent applications of Bluetooth include: headset. This was one of the earliest applications to become popular. Mobile phone headset with internal structure-

Wi-fi

Wi-Fi is used to create wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN). Wi-Fi or Wireless Fidelity, has a range of about 100m and allows for faster data transfer rate between 10 - 54Mbps. The two standards of wi-fi are relatively inexpensive and can be found providing wireless connectivity in airports, railway stations, cafes, bars, restaurants and other public areas.

WiMAX is a wireless digital communications system, also known as IEEE 802.16, that is intended for wireless "metropolitan area networks". WiMAX can provide broadband wireless access (BWA) up to 30 miles (50 km) for fixed stations, and 3 - 10 miles (5 - 15 km) for mobile stations. In contrast, the WiFi/802.11 wireless local area network standard is limited in most cases to only 100 300 feet (30 - 100m).

Purpose:The purpose of Wi-Fi is to hide complexity by enabling wireless access to applications and data, media and streams. The main aims of Wi-Fi are the following:ensure compatibility and co-existence of devices eliminate cabling and wiring make access to information easier eliminate switches, adapters, plugs, pins and connectors .

Advantages

Spaces where cables cannot run, such as outdoor areas and historical buildings, can host wireless LANs. Wi-fi detector

Wireless adapters allow devices to connect to a wireless network. These adapters connect to devices using various internal interconnects such as PCI, miniPCI, USB, ExpressCard, Cardbus and PC card. Most newer laptop computers are equipped with internal adapters. Internal cards are generally more difficult to install.

USES:

In addition to restricted use in homes and offices, Wi-Fi can make access publicly available at Wi-Fi hotspots provided either free of charge or to subscribers to various providers. Many consumer devices use Wi-Fi. Amongst others, personal computers can network to each other and connect to the Internet, mobile computers can connect to the Internet from any Wi-Fi hotspot, and digital cameras can transfer images wirelessly.

WiMax..

WiMax is Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access. WiMax operates on two frequency bands, 2 11GHz and 10 - 66GHz and has a range of about 50km with speeds of upto 80Mbps. This enables smaller wireless LANs to be interconnected by WiMax creating a large wireless MAN..

Networking between cities can be achieved without the need for expensive cabling. It is also able to provide high speed wireless broadband access to users.

Uses:

Connecting Wi-Fi hotspots to the Internet. Providing data and telecommunications services. Providing a source of Internet connectivity as part of a business continuity plan. That is, if a business has a fixed and a wireless Internet connection, especially from unrelated providers, they are unlikely to be affected by the same service outage. Providing portable connectivity.

Comparison of Wi-Fi and WiMax

Wi-fi

WiMax

Wi-Fi is generally a shorter range system, typically tens of yards/meters, though its range can be extended to over a kilometer using directional antennas. Typically Wi-Fi is used by an end user to access their own network, which may or may not be connected to the Internet.

WiMax and Wi-Fi have quite different Quality of Service (QoS) mechanisms. WiMax uses a mechanism based on connections between the Base Station and the user device

Wireless LANs based on Wi-Fi have been a resounding success, and now the focus in wireless is shifting to the wide area. With product shipments due out at the end of 2004, WiMax will be the next wireless WAN technology to debut. With increased market recognition for WiMax comes comparisons
