LAGUNDI
Scientific Name: Vitex negundo L. English Name: 5 leaves chaste Local Name: kamalan

Definition

A shrub growing wild in vacant lots and wasteland. Matured branches are planted. The flowers are blue and bell-shaped. The small fruits turn black when ripe. It is better to collect the leaves when they are in bloom.

Indication
For asthma, cough, & fever Colds and pain in any part of the body (as in influenza) Skin diseases (dermatitis, scabies, ulcer, eczema) and wounds Headache Rheumatism, sprain, contusion, insect bites Aromatic bath for sick patients

Parts Used and Preparation


For asthma, cough, & fever boil chopped raw fruits or leaves in 2 glasses of water left for 15 mins. Until the water left in only 1 glass (decoction). Then strain.

Colds and pain in any part of the body (as in influenza) boil a handful of leaves and flowers in water to produce a glass full of decoction 3x a day.

Parts Used and Preparation


Skin diseases (dermatitis, scabies, ulcer, eczema) and wounds prepare a decoction of the leaves wash and clean the skin or wound with the decoction.

Headache crush leaves may be applied to the forehead.

Rheumatism, sprain, contusion, insect bites pound the leaves and apply on affected part.

Aromatic bath for sick patients prepare leaf decoction for use in sick and newly delivered patients.

Definition

A weed, with heart shaped that grow in shady parts of the garden and yard.

Indication
lowers uric acid (rheumatism and gout)

Wash the leaves well 1 cup leaves are boiled in 2 glass fullsof water over low fire

Definition

A hardy plant, whose strongly, pungent bulb is used in cookery and medicine. The bulb of such a plant, consisting of smaller bulbs, or cloves, used in cooking, sometimes in the form of a powder or flakes.

Hypertension Toothache

To lower cholesterol levels in blood

Parts Used and Preparation


May be fried, roasted, soaked in vinegar for 30 mins. Or blanched in boiled water for 5 mins. Take 2 pieces 3x a day after meals.

Caution: take on a full stomach to prevent stomach and intestinal ulcers.

For tooth ache: pound a small piece and apply to affected part.

Scientific Name: Psidium guajava English Name: Guava Local Name: Bayabas

Definition

A tree about 4-5 meters high with tiny white flowers with round or oval fruits that are eaten raw. Propagated through seeds.

Indication

For washing wounds Diarrhea Toothache

Parts Used and Preparation


For washing wounds may be used twice a day

Diarrhea may be taken 3-4x a day

Tooth ache warm decoction is used for gargle. Freshly pounded leaves are used for tooth ache. Guava leaves are to be washed well and chopped. Boil for 15 mins. At low fire. Do not cover pot. Cool and strain before use.

Scientific Name: Mentha cordifelia English Name: Peppermint Local Name: Yerba Buena

Definition

A small multi branching aromatic herb. The leaves are small, elliptical and with toothed margin. The stem creeps to the ground, and develops roots. May also be propagated through cuttings.

Indication
For pain in different parts of the body as headache, stomach ache Rheumatism, arthritis, and headache Cough and colds Swollen gums Toothache Menstrual and gas pain Nausea and fainting Insect bites Pruritus

Parts Used and Preparation


For pain in different parts of the body as headache, stomach ache boil chopped leaves ion 2 glasses of water for 15 mins. Cool and strain.

Rheumatism, arthritis, and headache crush the fresh leaves and squeeze sap. Massage sap on painful parts with eucalyptus.

Cough and colds get about 10 fresh leaves and soak in a glass of hot water. Drink as tea. Acts as an expectorant.

Parts Used and Preparation


Swollen gums soak 6 grams of fresh plant in a glass of boiling water for 30 mins. Use solution as gargle.

Toothache cut fresh plant and squeeze sap. Soak a piece of cotton in the sap and insert this in aching tooth cavity. Mouth should be rinsed by gargling salt solution before inserting the cotton. To prepare salt solution: add 5 grams of table salt to 1 glass of water.

Menstrual and gas pain soak a handful of leaves in a glass of boiling water. Drink infusion. It induces menstrual flow and sweating.

Nausea and fainting crush leaves and apply to nostrils of patient.

Insect bites crush leaves and apply juice on affected part or pound leaves until paste like then rub it on affected part.

Pruritus boil plant alone or with eucalyptus in water. Use decoction as a wash on affected area.

DRIED LEAVES FRESH LEAVES Adult 6 tbsp 4 tbsp. 7-12 y.o. 3 tbsp. 2 tbsp.

Divide decoction into 2 parts and drink one part every 3 hours.

Definition

A plant that reaches 1 to 3 meters in height with rough hairy leaves. Young plants around the mother plant may be separated when they have 3 or more leaves.

Indication

Anti edema, diuretic, anti- urolithiasis

Parts Used and Preparation


Anti edema, diuretic, anti- urolithiasis boil chopped leaves in water for 15 mins until 1 glassful remains. Cool and strain.

Note: Sambong is not a medicine for kidney infection.

Dosage and Frequency

Fresh, matured leaves are pounded. Apply soap to affected part 1 2 x a day

Definition

A vine which bears tiny fruits and grows wild in backyards. The seeds must come from mature, dried but newly opened fruits. Propagated through stem cuttings about 20 cms. in height.

Anti-helmintic

Parts Used and Preparation


Anti-helmintic use to expel round worms like ascariasis. The seeds are taken 2 hours after dinner. If no worms are expelled, the dose may be repeated after 1 week.

Definition

A shrub with small, shiny nice looking leaves that grows in wild uncultivated areas and forests. Mature stems are used for planting.

Diarrhea boil the following amount of chopped leaves in 2 glasses of water for 15 mins or until amount of water goes down to 1 glass. Cool and strain.

Stomachache wash leaves and chop. Boil chopped leaves in 1 glass of water for 15 minutes. Cool and filter/strain then drink

Definition

Tropical and subtropical vine of the family Cucurbitaceae, widely grown for edible fruit, which is among the most bitter of all fruits.

Indication

Lower blood sugar levels

Diabetes mellitus (mild non insulin dependent)

Parts Used and Preparation


Gather and wash young leaves very well. Chop. Boil 6 tbsp in 2 glass full of water for 15 mins under low fire. Do not cover the pot. Cool and strain. Take 1/3 cup 3x a day after meals. Note: young leaves may be blanched or steamed and eaten glass full 2x a day.

Reminder
Avoid the use of insecticides as these may leave poison on plants. In the preparation of herbal medicine, use a clay pot and remove cover while boiling at low heat Use only the part of the plant being advocated Follow accurate dose of suggested preparation Use only one kind of herbal plant for each type of symptoms or sickness Stop giving the herbal medication in case untoward reaction such as allergy occurs If signs and symptoms are not relieved after 2 or 3 doses of herbal medication, consult a doctor
