The Necessity of having clearly defined goals and objectives

Educational management is a field of study and practice concerned with the operation of educational organizations. The present author has argued consistently (Bush, 1986; Bush, 1995; Bush, 1999; Bush, 2003) that educational management has to be centrally concerned with the purpose or aims of education. These purposes or goals provide the crucial sense of direction to underpin the

management of educational institutions. Unless this link between

purpose and management is clear and close, there is a danger of managerialism . . . a stress on procedures at the expense of

educational purpose and values (Bush, 1999, p. 240).

The call for change in Educational Aims at International Level

Today at the dawn of the 21st century, faced with the harsh reality of the utter failure of present education system to cater for the flourishing of a peaceful and harmonious society (Fromm, 1997), we are in dire need for a major revolution in the education sector. Indeed, as noted by Kim (2010, p. 83), the industrial economy required the training of workers who would perform their assigned tasks and this robotic image can no longer prevail if education is to contribute to the holistic development of the student. In the same spirit, Adams (2011, p.78) advocates that, in 2011, the world we live in is no longer rooted in the economic model of industrialism and the intellectual model of academicism. It is hence argued that a radical change in education is therefore needed to meet the Copyright-2011 Lecture by Viraiyan changing needs of the present and future generations. Meaning of Education
The word education is derived from two latins, namely: Educare and Educere Educare means to mould / to train Educere means to bring out / to lead out

Educare
Educare then means to mould or to train (Adeyemo, 2010; Muhammad, 2009). educare, can be considered as a sub-objective of education. Whereby the individual is trained and therefore acquires the necessary knowledge and skills for

doing a particular job, thus ensuring material progress at

personal and societal level.

Educere
educere means "leading out" or "leading forth" (Rosado, 2000; Webster, 2003; Muhammad, 2009; Fuller, 2010) or bring out and bring forth what is within (Scheele, 2010). Figler and Hanlon (2008, p.614) observe, education in its truest sense refer to the Latin word educere meaning to lead, draw, educe and bring forth that which is latent in an individual.
