1xEV-DO Network Architecture

1xEV-DO is a new air interface protocol optimized for Packet Data 1xEV-DO is using the Wireless IP data network model that is different from IS-41 network model used for existing cdmaOne (IS-95) and cdma2000 (IS-2000) networks 1xEV-DO uses new Radio Access Network (RAN) that provides the 1xEV-DO air interface and also interfaces directly to Packet Data Serving Node (PDSN) via R-P (A10A11) interface Provides Mobile IP or Simple IP access based on Access Terminal (AT) and PDSN capabilities Accounting, Authentication and Authorization (AAA) server contains all 1xEV-DO subscriber information

1xEV-DO Handoff Scenarios

Active State Handoff
Forward Link (FL):
Forward Link Is Transmitted in Simplex Mode Access Terminal (AT) Selects the Strongest Leg From the Active Set and the Data Rate That It Can Support Via the Data Rate Control (DRC) Channel. Indicates from which sector it will select the strongest signal; DRC on Reverse Link will indicate from where it will need what data rate. The Same Active Set Is Defined for Both Forward and Reverse Link

Reverse Link (RL) Softer Handoff - All Sectors Are in the Same Cell Soft Handoff - Different Cells:
Intra 1xEV-DO FMS Cells Connected to the Same 1xEV-DO FMS Inter 1xEV-DO FMS Cells Are Connected to Different 1xEV-DO FMS

Dormant State Handoff

Inter-PCF Handoff
Retains Connection to the Same PDSN When the AT Crosses the Subnet (FMS) Boundaries While in Dormant Mode
