The Theory Behind The Phantom Project

Discuss the following questions (again!) in trios:

1. Do your skills affect the way you plan classes (cooking, music playing, sports, etc.)? How? 2. How do you apply your personal interests in class (reading, tv shows, etc.)? 3. How familiar are you with the new technologies (internet, smartphones, social network, etc)? 4. What kind of books did you like reading when you were a teen?

Personal Projects = different projects

Too complex?
Too complicated? Time-consuming?

Feeling like a vegetarian in a barbecue?

Make it simple; make it pleasant!

What is appealing to my students?
AND What is pleasant to me (the teacher)?

The 4 Aspects of The Phantom Project

Technology 2. Interaction 3. Competition <-> Cooperation 4. Concretization
1.

Technology
New paths to teach fundamental skills (writing,

reading, collaboration); Its a rehearse for the 21st century communication;

Interaction
It connects the world outside the classroom;
Unpredictable responses and infinite database; Students become the subject, not object of their of

reality; Students use their previous knowledge to construct new knowledge.

Competition <-> Cooperation

Competition:
- increases engagement; - makes students improve; - makes students do their best; - shows that not winning doesnt mean losing; - prepares students to accept failure; - involves challenge and problem-solving; - is a good way for self-assessment.

Cooperation:
- builds teamwork; - teaches students discipline; - teaches students leadership; - teaches students unselfishness; - makes students part of something bigger than

themselves.

Concretization
The CRA Approach:
- Concrete: the doing stage; - Representational: the seeing stage; - Abstract: the imagining stage.

A rough idea of what that should be:

Std Std

Some dos and donts

Competition focusing on achievement Teacher as a facilitator Teachers goals different from students goals Step-by-step instructions Technology accessible to everyone

Any questions?
