The verb must always agree with the subject

Rules:

If the subject is singular, the verb is singular. e.g.: - He is a worker. - That girl dances beautifully.

If the subject is plural, the verb is plural. e.g.: - They are workers. - Parents love their children.

If two or more singular subjects are joined by and, the verb is plural. e.g.: - Lisa and Wati are nurses. - Joanne and Lexy work very hard.

If two or more singular subjects are joined by or, neithernor, either or or notbut, the verb is singular. e.g.:
- Neither John nor his father likes chilli. - This table or that chair is going to be painted blue. - Either he or she likes potatoes. - Not Jane but Willy was the master.

If one of the two subjects connected by 'or', 'nor', or 'but' is singular and the other is plural, the verb agrees in number with the nearer one. e.g.: - Neither the girl nor the boys were here.

-Not only the pupils but also the teacher


was late.

If two subjects connected by 'or' or 'nor' different in person, the verb agrees with the nearer one.

e.g.: - Gerry or you tell her. - Either she or I have to help them. - Neither we nor he asks you anything.

If a singular subject is joined to other subjects by 'with', 'as well as', 'together with', 'in addition to, 'no less' etc., the verb is singular.

e.g.: - My husband as well as my children likes eating. -Ms. Charles together with her teacher is going to France.

When subjects are separated by 'all but', 'both and', the verb is plural. e.g.: - All but Tommy dont have any witness. - Both Dion and Anita enjoy singing.

If two or more subjects are preceded by 'each', 'every', the verb is singular. e.g.: - Each adult and child has to pay to enter the show room. - Every boy and girl likes presents.

If two singular subjects refer to the same person or thing, the verb is singular.

If two subjects are used to express one idea, the verb may be singular.
e.g. Bread and butter is all I take for breakfast.

Indefinite pronouns like 'anybody', 'anyone', 'everybody', 'nobody', 'no one' and 'somebody' require a singular verb. e.g. - Is anyone coming with me now? - Everybody wants to drink. - Somebody has broken the window.

Where a sentence begins with 'it', the verb is always singular.
e.g. It is we who told him about it. - It is the Soegiartos.

If a sentence begins with 'there' or 'here', the verb agrees with the following subject, not the introductory word. e.g. - Here is your umbrella. - There are lots of cars parked along the road.

A collective noun takes a singular verb when it means a group. A collective noun takes a plural verb when it refers to the members in a group.(Collective nouns are generally used with singular verbs) e.g.: A group of boys is playing in the garden. There is a herd of cattle grazing in the field. The team wins every time. The committee is going to decide.

A collective noun takes a plural verb when it refers to the members in a group.
e.g. - The team are working well together. - The committee were divided in their opinions.

Titles of books, magazines, movies, newspapers or plays take a singular verb.

e.g. - The Sound of Music is a musical film. - Little Women has been read by millions of people.

Plural numbers take a singular verb when they are used in a phrase to mean a sum or unit.
e.g. - A million dollars is a lot of money. - Three years is a long time.

Some nouns are plural in form but singular in meaning. They usually take a singular verb.
e.g. - Physics bores me to death. - No news is good news

All ..., both of, many, a few, several take plural verbs.
e.g.: - All scouts are to report for duty at eight oclock. - Both the books are useful as guides. - Many insects do not fly. - Several women are working in the field.

Plenty of, some of, any of, a lot of, most of, all of take both singular and plural sense based on the subject nouns that follow.

e.g. - Some of the boys have planned to go on a picnic - Some of the food has been left on the table.

- All his work has been wasted. - Most of the girls study in the library. - About two-thirds of the sugar was spilt. - Almost two-thirds of the oranges were bad.

e.g. : - All is well - All has been done.

When I went home last night, it was raining cats and dogs. There was a leak in my roof. So, when I entered the house, all was wet.

Note : All referring to a number of items mentioned previously agrees with a plural verbs.
E.g.: I have five dogs. All are very eager to greet me.

None agrees with the subject noun that is nearer to it. e.g. : - None of this business concerns me. - None of the players are ready

Abstract and uncountable nouns are generally used with Singular verbs.
e.g.: - Milk contains all the necessary nutritious elements. - Air is a mixture of gases. - The laughter of the boys was distinctly clear.

Some nouns are always plural, i.e. scissors, shorts, pants, jeans, tongs, trousers, eyeglasses, pliers, tweezers. e.g. - Those pants are Rp.100.000. - The tongs are new.

A number of takes plural verbs, while The number of take singular verbs. e.g. - A number of students are going to the class picnic. ( a number of=many) - The number of days in a week is seven.

The verb of the adjective clause agrees with the antecedent in number or in person.
In number : e.g. - A man who runs away is a coward. - The people who are blocking the road are very angry.

A noun clause subject requires a singular main verb. e.g. : - What you have done has broken her heart. - That all pupils had to report to the teacher after the class-meeting was a burden for the pupils.

A plural verb is required if the sub-clause is continued with a plural complement. e.g. : - What they wanted were two cups of
coffee, glass of milk and three pastries.
