– Bar code space readers
– Optical mark readers
i. Type written and type set scanners
ii. Magnetic ink character recognition

B. Smart cards
C. Voice input Devices
D. Pointing Devices
i. Light Pen
ii. Mouse
iii. Track bar
iv. Touch screen digitizers
1. Keyboard Input Devices
 It is the primary input and control device, used to
enter data and issue commands.
 A standard keyboard include about 100 keys.
 Each key sends different signals to the CPU.
 Most keyboards have a certain number of features
in common:
i. Standard typewriter keys
ii. Function keys
ii. Special-purpose keys
iii. Cursor-movement keys
iv. Numeric keys

 The keyboard sends the computer a special kind

of message called an interrupt request.
A. Terminals
 The terminal is used for inputting and retrieving
data from a remotely located main system.
 Most terminals are desktop size and are not
meant to be carried around.
 Terminals can be dumb, smart or intelligent.
 The popular types of terminals are:
i. Point-of-sale (POS) terminals
ii. Functional transaction terminals
iii. Executive work station terminals
iv. Portable terminals
v. Microcomputers used as terminals
A. Dedicated data entry
systems
 The group of terminals connected to the mini
computers that handle data entry and
storage.

 They input and store data using key to tape,

key to disk or key to diskettes.

A. Scanning Devices
 A device that scans hard copy and digitizes the
text or image to computer in interpretable form.

 There are four kinds of scanning devices

 Bar code readers: It acts as a data entry device for

analyzing the bar codes.

 Optical mark readers: This technology is used wildly for

scoring examinations and inputting raw data recorded on
questionnaires.
 Character readers: This device is used to sped up
and reduce the cost of converting type written and
typist data to computer usable from. It includes
Fax machines and Scanners.

 Magnetic Ink Character Recognition: This device

is used for reading the numeric characters and a
few special symbols printed on checks with
magnetic ink.
A. Smart cards
 The card which has microchip that provides
processing power and an electronic memory
that does not loose its data when the power
is turned off.
A. Voice Input Devices
 It is a device which converts spoken words
into computer usable codes by comparing the
electrical patterns produced by the speakers
voice with a set of pre recorded pattern.
A. Pointing Devices
 Mouse: It is a point and draw device that
when moved across a desktop a particular
distance and direction, causes the same
movement of cursor on the screen.

 Track Ball: A pointing device that works like

an upside down mouse to move the pointer
around the screen by rolling the ball with a
thumb.
 Light Pen: A point and draw device that is
rolled across the desktop like a mouse and
held like a pen.

 Touch Screen: This device comprises of

screens that are used by the users to enter
data into a desired location.

 Digitizers: The devices used in drafting and

map making.
