INTRODUCTION
PDD under development in HIT lab, University of Washington. Not a screen based technology. Scans light directly on to retina of eye. Full colour, high resolution, high brightness wide field of view . Display without flickering. Potential applications include HMDs for military, aerospace, engineering, medical Display technology for future

BASICS OF VRD

Substitute to conventional bulky and power hungry VDUs. Light is focused to a miniscule image(frame) on retina. SLD or LED triads of R,G&B emits light. Mixing in proportions can produce any colour. As light scans the retina, it is intensity modulated by the video signal. Scanning is performed directly onto retina in a raster pattern through collimating optics.

WHY VRD..???
Large sized monitors High weight and power consumption User should focus at a particular depth Limited brightness Reduced the 3D effect virtual reality applications

BLOCK DIAGRAM OF VRD

HOW IT WORKS??

HOW IT WORKS

(cont)

SDE receive and process incoming video signal Image compensation and display control Modulated light beam from laser light sources Horizontal scanning in raster pattern Vertical scanning at lower frequency Light passed through pupil expander Scanned raster image

IMAGE FORMATION

Resultant image perceived as wide field of view image originating from some viewing distance in space.

APPLICATIONS
VRDs can reduce the read-time and can act as always present guides for many tasks. The various fields of application of VRD technology are listed. Radiology Surgery Therapeutics (Scanning Laser Ophthalmoscope) Production Communication Augmented \ Virtual reality Aerospace Military

MILITARY APPLICATIONS
Technology advantage situational awareness Head mounted displays High quality image Public safety systems

MEDICAL APPLICATIONS
Imaging techniques in diagnostics Portable digitized information. Image guided surgery Superimposed image over target Assistance in laproscopy and endoscopy

COMMERCIAL APPLICATIONS
Augmented(see through) vision guidance in manufacturing process. Access to blueprints and plans. Digitized repair manuals. Inventory control Gaming industries Consumer electronics

ADVANTAGES
Small size and weight Low power consumption High resolution and luminance Image overlaying Reasonable cost Wide range of applications

LIMITATIONS
Cannot be used as a public display system Head and eye tracking may be required Should be more light Resolution to be improved Resolution of human vision 8400 x 5400 With VRD 7680 x 4320

FUTURE SCOPE
Depends on affordability LEDs as light sources Expanding PC screen into real world Enhanced media applications like virtual holodecks Replacement of cell phone and car navigator screens

CONCLUSION
Break through in imaging technology Stream photons to receptors of eye No edges and no flickers Less hazardous to vision Advanced AR applications
