Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa Population (2010 est)155,215,573 (growth rate: 1.9%); birth rate: 36.

36.0/1000; infant mortality rate: 92.9/1000; Relatively high levels of maternal mortality (800 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births) Current prevalence rate for contraceptive use in Nigeria is approximately 11% - 13%

Preference for large families runs deep in Nigerian culture Huge majority of Nigerians belonged to religious groups (Islam and Catholic) which rejected Western birth control methods on moral grounds.

Project

funded by the Pathminder Fund headed by Dr. Watage Objective: Organizing and training five teams of field workers to demonstrate acceptance of a new method of birth control. Birth Control Implant (Implanon) Birth Control Patch (Ortho Evra)

Main constraint
only 10 staff Two types of training materials must be prepared

Main Findings:
10 staff to conduct the training 94 days calculated to complete the training

Issues
Not enough Human Resources Training need to be completed in 60 days Materials need to be prepared ahead of time Stakeholders cooperation and endorsement is vital

Assumptions
If there is enough human resources and if the project is completed in 60 days, then the project should be successful.

Stakeholders
Donor Trainers Trainees Health Committees/Council Community of Over-The-River Province Community of neighboring provinces Churches People of Nigeria

If we want to decrease the number of days to complete the project to 60 days, then we need extra funding ($500) We need extra manpower on certain days to be able to complete the project. Need to be specific on what task should be implemented Activities not on the critical path can be moved around depending on the late finishing time so that the critical path activities can be completed on time according to schedule. Benchmark will be based on comparing to other similar projects. Need to be sensitive to cultural context and values, and religious beliefs.

Will the project be accepted by all stakeholders? If any of the stakeholders reject the project, will some reward (monetary or other) change their mind? Cultural acceptance.will the community accept this form of training, considering values and norms Geographic diversitywill the training cover the whole geographical land-area? Supplies of contraception.where, how many, quality and consistency

To ensure that this project is successful and timely , we need to take into serious consideration the fact that, even though we might have enough funding from the donors, enough human resources and materials, BUT..if we do not have the cooperation and endorsement of the Stakeholders, the project would fail.
