AEI- 305.38 1
Objectives

On the completion of this topic you would be able

to know about
Gas filled Thermometers
• Principle of operation
• Range of temperature
• Advantages & Disadvantage
• Vapor pressure thermometer

AEI- 305.38 2
The co-efficient of cubical expansion

• Solid (stainless steel) = 0.00003

• Liquid (Mercury) = 0.00018
• Gas (air) = 0.0037

AEI- 305.38 3
Principle
The volume occupied by given mass of gas at a fixed
pressure is a function of
• Molecular weight
• Temperature
• In equation
• PV = nRT
Where, P is pressure in N/m2
V is the volume in m3
T is the temperature in ºK
R is the gas constant with a value of 8.314 J.mol-1.k-1

AEI- 305.38 4
Gases Used In Thermometer

• Nitrogen:
Inert and inexpensive
• Helium :
Above 427 °C and extremely low temperature.

AEI- 305.38 5
Gas Filled Thermometer

Fig 1

AEI- 305.38 6
Operation

• It consists of a bulb filled with certain volume of inert

gas, Capillary and bourdon tube .

• As temperature rises, it increase the Volume of the gas.

• Uncurl the bourdon tube.

• Bourdon tube deflection is calibrated in terms of

temperature of the medium that the bulb is exposed.

AEI- 305.38 7
Advantages

• Gas in the bulb has a Lower thermal capacity than

similar quantity of liquid.

• The response of the thermometer to changes will be

more rapid than that for a liquid filled system with a bulb

of a same size and shape

AEI- 305.38 8
Disadvantages

• The range is quite limited

• When they are fail total replacement is necessary

AEI- 305.38 9
Vapour Pressure Thermometer

• Bulb is partially filled with liquid

• Capillary and Burdon tube filled with

vapor

AEI- 305.38 10
Liquids used in vapour pressure thermometer

AEI- 305.38 11
Vapor Pressure Thermometer

Fig 2
AEI- 305.38 12
Operation
• Liquid in vapor pressure boils and vaporized during the
operation which create a gas or vapor inside the
capillary and bourdon tube
• The liquid in side bulb continue to boil until the
pressure in the system equal the vapor pressure of the
boiling liquid
• At this point the liquid stops boiling unless its
temperature increases.

AEI- 305.38 13
Operation…
• When the temperature of substance surrounding
the bulb drops ,the liquid and bulb inside the bulb
is cool. This cause some of the vapor to condense

• As the vapor condense ,the pressure inside the system

decrease.
• This action continue until the pressure drop to the vapor
pressure of the boiling liquid.
• The change in pressure is indicated by bourdon tube.

AEI- 305.38 14
Range Of Temperature

• Vapour pressure thermometer -184°C to 343°C

• Gas filled thermometer -268°C to 760°C

AEI- 305.38 15
Advantages

• Long capillary length available

• Ambient temperature compensation not required.

• Fast speed of response.

AEI- 305.38 16
Disadvantages

• Non linear scale.

• No over range capacity.
