CCP303.22 1
Objectives

On completion of the topic, you will be able to :

 Calculation of Arithmetic Mean
 Under Continuous Series
 Cumulative Frequencies - exercises

CCP303.22 2
Recap
 Continuous Series: Items are arranged in groups or
classes continuously
 3 methods of calculation of AM:
a) Direct method, b) Short-cut method and
c) Step Deviation method
 Arithmetic Mean – Direct method = ∑fm
N
 Arithmetic Mean - Short-cut method = A + ∑fd
N

CCP303.22 3
Recap

 Arithmetic Mean - Short-cut method = A + ∑fd

N
 Arithmetic Mean – Step Deviation method =

A + ∑fdx X c

CCP303.22 4
Cumulative Frequency Distribution

 There are two ways a cumulative frequency

distribution can be given :
 Less than cumulative frequency distribution
 More than cumulative frequency distribution

CCP303.22 5
Cumulative Frequency Distribution contd..

 Less than cumulative frequency distribution

Steps:
1) Start with upper limits of classes
2) Go on adding the frequencies
3) When frequencies are plotted on graph, it appears
like a rising curve

CCP303.22 6
Cumulative Frequency Distribution contd..

 More than cumulative frequency distribution

Steps:
1) Start with lower limits of classes
2) From the frequencies subtract frequency
of each class
3) The result is a declining curve

CCP303.22 7
Example 1:

Convert the following frequency distribution into a

cumulative frequency distribution by (a) less than
method and (b) by more than method:

Marks: 10-20 20-30 30-40 40-50 50-60 50-60

No. of
Students: 4 6 10 20 18 2

CCP303.22 8
Solution 1:
Conversion – Cumulative Frequency distribution

Marks No. of Marks No. of

students students
Less than 20 4 More than 10 60
Less than 30 10 More than 20 56
Less than 40 20 More than 30 50
Less than 50 40 More than 40 40
Less than 60 58 More than 50 20
Less than 70 60 More than 60 2
More than 70 0

CCP303.22 9
Important points

 When cumulative frequencies are given, first

convert them into an ordinary frequency
distribution and solve the problem

CCP303.22 10
Example 2:
Find the average mark of students from the following
table:

Marks No. of students

Below 80 240
Below 70 190
Below60 125
Below 50 95
Below 40 75
Below 30 60
Below 20 40
(C-05,Oct 2007, 12 marks)
Below 10 21
CCP303.22 11
Solution to Ex. 2:

 Convert Less than Cumulative frequency

distribution into a Simple Frequency distribution
 Last class interval should be 70-80
 First class interval should be 0-10 and its frequency
will be 25

CCP303.22 12
Solution Contd
CALCULATION OF ARITHMETIC MEAN

Marks No. of Mid –points d = (M-35) dx=d/c fdx

(x) students (f) (m) C=10

0-10 25 5 -40 -4 -100

10-20 15 15 -30 -3 -45
20-30 20 25 -20 -2 -40
30-40 15 35 -10 -1 -15
40-50 20 45 0 0 0
50-60 30 55 +10 +1 +30
60-70 65 65 +20 +2 +130
70-80 50 75 +30 +3 +150
N=240 ∑fdx= 110
CCP303.22 13
Solution Contd
A.M. = A + ∑fdx X c
N
A = 45, N = 240, c = 10, ∑fdx = 110
A.M. = 45 + 110 X 10
240
= 45 + 1100/240
= 45 + 4.58
= 49.58
Average Mark = 49.58 or 50 marks
CCP303.22 14
Example 3:

Calculate Arithmetic Mean from the following data:

Marks No. of
students
Above 0 150
Above 10 140
Above 20 100
Above 30 80
Above 40 80
Above 50 70
Above 60 30
Above 70 14
Above 80 0
CCP303.22 15
Solution to Ex. 3

 More than cumulative frequency distribution is

given in problem
 Convert it into a simple frequency distribution
 Since marks above 80 is zero, the last class should
be 70-80 and the number of students are 14
 The first class should be 0-10 and the number of
students are 10(150-140)

CCP303.22 16
Solution Contd

CALCULATION OF ARITHMETIC MEAN

Marks No. of Mid –points (M-35) dx=d/c fdx
(x) students (f) (m) d C=10

0-10 10 (150-140) 5 -40 -4 -40

10-20 40 (140-100) 15 -30 -3 -120
20-30 20 (100-80) 25 -20 -2 -40
30-40 0 (80-80) 35 -10 -1 0
40-50 10 (80-70) 45 0 0 0
50-60 40 (70-30) 55 +10 +1 +40
60-70 16 (30-14) 65 +20 +2 +32
70-80 14 (14-0) 75 +30 +3 +42
N=150 ∑fdx= -86
CCP303.22 17
Solution contd
A.M. = A + ∑fdx X c
N
A = 45, N = 150, C = 10, ∑fdx = -86
A.M. = 45 + -86 X 10
150
= 45 – 860/150
= 45 – 5.73
= 39.27
A.M. = 39 marks

CCP303.22 18
Summary
 Always convert cumulative frequency distribution
into simple frequency distribution.
 Follow any method to calculate AM. It gives same
result.
 Take any value of ‘m’ as assumed mean. But it is
better to take highest frequency of mid-point as
assumed mean
 C is the class interval

CCP303.22 19

1) State whether true or False for the following:

1. Cumulative frequencies are to be converted into

ordinary frequency table
True
3. Mid point = upper limit – lower limit
