Subject : Quantitative Techniques-I
Subject code : CCP-303
Topic : Median
Sub topic : Calculation of Median
Duration : 50 mts
Teaching Aids: : PPT, Animation

CCP303.34 11
Objectives:

On completion of this period, you would be

able to :
 Calculate Median for Continuous series
(Exclusive classes)

CCP303.34 2
Recap
 Median is middle-most value of the variables
that are arranged in order
 Median for ungrouped data = Size of (n+1)/2th
observation provided the observations are
arranged in either ascending or descending
order
 For discrete series M = Size of (N+1)/2th item
where M = Median, N = Total frequency

CCP303.34 3
Calculation of Median
Continuous Series (Exclusive classes)

Steps:
 Determine the particular class in which
the value of median lies. Use N/2 as the
rank of the median
 After ascertaining the Median class,
apply the formula to determine the exact
value of median

CCP303.34 4
Median – Continuous Series - Formula
L2 - L 1
M= L1 + --------------X( m - c)
F1
Where:
M = Median
L1 = Lower limit of the median class
L2 = Upper limit of the median class
f1 = frequency of the median class
m = N/2
C = Cumulative frequency of the class
preceding the median class

CCP303.34 5
Example 1:
Calculate Median from the following
distribution:

Length in No. of units

inches
0-20 1
20-40 14
40-60 35
60-80 85
80-100 90
100-120 45
120-140 18
140-160 2
CCP303.34 6
Solution to Ex. 1

CALCULATION OF MEDIAN
Length in inches (x) No. of units (f) Cumulative
frequency (c.f.)
0-20 1 1
20-40 14 15
40-60 35 50
60-80 85 135
80-100 90 225
100-120 45 270
120-140 18 288
140-160 2 290

CCP303.34 7
Solution contd

M = Size of N/2th item

= Size of 290/2th item
= Size of 145th item

Median lies in the class 80-100 (since 145 in the

cumulative frequency has the corresponding ‘x’ value
as 80-100)

CCP303.34 8
Solution contd
L2 – L1
M = L1 + ----------(m - c)
f1

= 80 + 100 -135 (145-135)

90
= 80 + 20 x 10
90
= 80 + 2.22
= 82.22
Hence median length = 82.22 inches

CCP303.34 9
Example 2:
Calculate Median for the following
frequency distribution:
Marks No. of
students
45-50 10
40-45 15
35-40 26
30-35 30
25-30 42
20-25 31
15-20 24
10-15 15
5-10 7
CCP303.34 10
Solution to Ex. 2

First arrange the data in ascending order and then

find out median
CALCULATION OF MEDIAN
Marks (x) No. of students (f) Cumulative frequency (c.f.)
5-10 7 7
10-15 15 22
15-20 24 46
20-25 31 77
25-30 42 119
30-35 30 149
35-40 26 175
40-45 15 190
45-50 10 200

CCP303.34 11
M = Size of N/2th item See the 100th item
= Size of 200/2th item in c.f. column
= Size of 100th item
Median lies in the class 25-30
L2 - L1
Median = L1 + -----------(m - c)
f1
L1=25, L2=30, m=100, c=77, f1=42

30- 25
Median = 25 + -------------(100-77)
42
= 25 + (5 x 23)/42
= 25 + 2.74
Hence, Median mark = 27.74
CCP303.34 12
Summary
Median for Continuous series can be calculated as
follows:
 Find out the cumulative frequencies
 Find the median class with the value of
m=Size of N/2th item
L2-L1
 Apply the formula L1 + ------------(m-c)
f1
