Objectives

• On completion of this period, you would be able to:

• Solve the problems using maximum power transfer theorem

EC 303.54 2
Recap

In the previous session we have learnt

• Maxim mum power Transfer theorem

• and solved problems

EC 303.54 3
EXAMPLE 1 :- Determine the maximum power delivered
to the load in the circuit shown below.

SOLUTION FOR PROBLEM -1

• For the given circuit let us find the thevenin’s equivalent

circuit across AB as shown.

• The total resistance is

• RT = [ { ( 3+2) ll 5 } + 10 ]

• = (2.5 + 10) = 12.5

• Total current drawn by the circuit is

EC 303.54 5
SOLUTION FOR PROBLEM -1 (continued..)

• IT = 50 /12.5 = 4 Amps.

• The current in the 3 ohm resistor is

• I3 = IT * 5 /( 5+5 ) = 4*5 / 10 = 2 Amps

• Thevenin’s voltage Vth = V3 = 3*2 = 6volts

• Thevenin’s resistance Rth = RAB = [{(10 ll 5) +2} ll 3 ]

• = 1.92 ohms
EC 303.54 6
• Thevenin’s equivalent circuit is shown below in figure b.

Example -2:

• Determine the load resistance to receive maximum

power from the source; also find the maximum power

delivered to the load in the circuit shown below ?

EC 303.54 11
Solution

• For the given circuit, we find out the

Theveni’s equivalent circuit.
Thevenin’s voltage across terminals A
and B is

• VAB = VA – VB

EC 303.54 12
10 Ω 20 Ω

100 v

A B
30 Ω 40 Ω

Fig 5

EC 303.54 13
• Voltage at point A is

• VA = 100*30/(30+10) =75 V

• Voltage at point B is

• VB = 100 * 40 / ( 40 + 20 ) = 66.67 V

• Hence VAB = 75 – 66.67 = 8.33 V

• The Thevenin’s resistance of the above circuit is

Thevenin’s resistance equivalent circuit.

A B
10 Ω 40 Ω

Fig 6

EC 303.54 15
• From above figure thevenin’s resistance
• RAB = [( 30 II 10 ) + ( 20 II 40 )] = 20.83 Ω
• Hence the thevenin’s equivalent circuit is

RAB = 20.83 Ω
A

8.33 V RL
IL

Fig 7
EC 303.54 16
• According to maximum power transfer theorem

• RL = 20.83 Ω

• Current drawn by the load resistance

• I L = 8.33 / ( 20.83 + 20.83 ) = 0.2 A

• Hence Maximum power delivered to load = I2LRL

• = (0.2)2 * ( 20.83 ) = 0.833 Watts.
