2nd GENERATION:
-Digital versatile disc (DVD): --- 4.7 GB -It offers high quality sound and video than CD.
-Next generation optical disc format. - can hold almost 5-10 times more data than a DVD. -Developed by Blu-ray disc association with more than 180 members such as Apple, Hitachi, HP, LG, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, Dell etc.
The Name
The blu-ray name is the combination of blue, for color of the laser that is used and ray for the optical ray.
The e in blue was purposefully left off, according to the manufacturers, because an everyday word cannot be a trademark.
discs read data by shining laser beam on the disc When reading an optical disc a low power laser beam is focused on the rotating DISC and its reflection is viewed by the read head. When the beam reflects back from the disc, it's intensity changes as it moves from "land" to "pits". These variations in the laser beam are decoded as data by the DISC drive.

CONCLUSION
The Blue-ray Disc is a technology platform that can store sound and video while maintaining high quality and also access the stored content in an easy-to-use way. The BD represents a major advancement in capacity as well as data transfer rate. Bluray disc offers HDTV video recording and reproducing since it enable large storage capacity and data transfer rates. So we can expect the BD to become more prevalent once the HDTV market establishes its presence
