(PERT)
Presented by Dhananjay Das

INTRODUCTION
PERT is a project management tool used to

schedule, organize, and coordinate tasks within a project. PERT stand for Programmed Evaluation Review Technique . It is basically a method to analyze the tasks involved in completing a given project, especially the time needed to complete each task, and to identify the minimum time needed to complete the total project .

OBJECTIVES
To simplify the scheduling and planning of large

and complex projects

To make possible decision making for complete

a project .
To reduce both the time and cost required to

complete a project.

STEPES OF THE PERT

Identify the specific activities and milestones.

Determine the proper sequence of the

activities.
Construct a network diagram.

Estimate the time required for each activity.

Determine the critical path. Update the PERT chart as the project

progresses.

Identify the specific activities and milestones.

Activities are the tasks required to

complete a project.
The milestones are the events marking

the beginning and the end of one or more activities.

Determine the proper sequence of the activities

This step can be combined with the

activity identification step since the activity sequence is evident for some tasks.

Construct a network diagram

Two types of network

diagrams.(Activity on arrow (AOA) & activity on node (AON)). Network diagram can be drawn showing the sequence of the serial and parallel activities.

Estimate the time required for each activity

Weeks are used unit of time for activity completion.
Deal with uncertainty in activity completion time.

Three time estimates.

Optimistic time Most likely time Pessimistic time

Determine the critical path

The critical path is determined by

adding the times for the activities in each sequence and determining the longest path in the project.

Update the PERT chart as the project progresses

Make adjustments in the PERT

chart as the project progresses.

ADVANTAGE
Clear information about the project.

A large amount of data can be organized. Its help to identify the critical path of

action. PERT gives a clear idea about the time taken in each and every stage of the project. Activity start and end date.

LIMITATION
They are applicable to only a narrow variety

of projects and industries. There is inherent danger of too much emphasis being placed on the critical path. The graphical nature of a network delays comprehension of the activity list's interrelationships. They can be used only to monitor schedules.
