BUS DUCTS
Classification 1. Isolated Bus ducts 2. Segregated bus ducts 3. Non-segregated bus ducts 4. Bus trunking

5/3/12

ISOLATED BUS DUCTS

Each phase conductor is mounted individually

in an enclosure.
It is air insulated. Voltage Ratings- 12 kv to 36 kv

Current Ratings- 30 KA to 45 KA
Cooling System- Natural Cooling(upto 800mw)

Forced Cooling(above 800 mw)

TYPES OF ISOLATED BUS DUCTS

2 types of isolated phase bus ducts are Discontinuous Isolated Phase Bus Duct. Continouous Isolated Phase Bus Duct.

Discontinuous Phase Bus

Duct(DIPBD):
Various sections of bus ducts are so

and earthed,that no path is

Continuous Phase Bus Duct(CIPBD):

Various sections of bus ducts are so

interconnected that low resistance path is provided for induced circulating currents to flow from one section to another. effects of external magnetic field on the conductor, thereby limiting the short circuit forces to a very low value.

the grounded enclosure largely reduce the

Arrangement provided for genrator bus duct

for current rating of 5000 A and above.

SEGREGATED BUS DUCTS

All phase conductors enclosed in a common

metal enclosure having metallic barriers between them. switchgear and transformers. 33kv

Serves as an interconnection between Current & Voltage Ratings- upto5000 A ,upto

NON SEGREGATED BUS DUCTS

enclosure with only air pressure & physical barrier. systems.
Used in trunking two separate switchgear Material used in manufacture is porcelain.

All phase conductors are in a common metal

BUS TRUNKING SYSTEM

Simple bus ducts with trunking arrangements. Most suitable for application where exact

location of power consumption is not contained. structures.

Ideal for industrial applications and high rise

5/3/12

DESIGN CRITERIA
Design of bus ducts is based on following

factors:

Continuous current rating Maximum system voltage ratings Dielectric requirements Climatic conditions Maximum dynamic and transient forces

5/3/12

SELECTION CRITERIA
Current carrying capability Skin Effect Proximity Effect Seismic Conditions Effect of Solar radiation on temperature rise Forces between different conductors inS.C.C. Resistivity required foe permissible thermal

conditions.

5/3/12

FEATURES OF BUSBARS
Flux outside enclosures is reduced by 95%. Cancels induction of currents and thereby

reducing losses in nearby equipments. adjacent phases.

Eliminates forces between conductors of Mechanical protection of live parts against

people, animals etc.

MATERIALS REQUIRED
Insulating material used should be

interchangeable & high strength. neoprene (rubber).

Examples silica gel, epoxy resin, porcelain, All conducting materials are made up of

aluminium alloy, copper alloy or sheet steel. aluminium alloy of suitable size known as ground bus.

Grounding is provided by separately running

TESTING OF BUSBARS
List of tests 1. Type tests 2. Power frequency voltage withstand tests 3. Water tightness &air leakage tests 4. Routine tests 5. Performance tests 6. Temperature tests 7. Lightening impulse voltage tests
