Data Analysis

Objective

Students will identify claims based on

statistical data and evaluate the
validity of the claims.

CA State Standard PS 6.2.5:

Identify claims based on statistical data and, in
simple cases, evaluate the validity of the claims.
Purpose

• Analyze data collected from the Port of Long

One of the ways that the Port of

for the City of Long Beach is by
providing jobs, both full- and part-

The Port uses statistics to study

these economic impacts.
Statistics is the organization and analysis of
data.
The data can be stored in charts and displayed
in different ways. We have studied the
following:

Studying graphs like these is a useful tool in
estimating the economic impacts.

notes
• When prompted, check your answers with your
neighbor
• Be prepared to explain your answers to the class
1) Which of the following statements are
true? (there may be more than one)

A Dissolved oxygen concentration decreased between 1976 and 1980.

B Harbor water quality dropped below the state minimum in 2003.

C The line graph indicates water quality being consistently above state
minimum standards.
D 1974 and 2005 had approximately the same oxygen concentration.
2) Which time period had the greatest
reduction of airborne dust?

A Jan 00 to Dec 00 B Dec 01 to Mar 02

C Jan 04 to Sep 04 D Sept 02 to Dec 02
3) The Port monitors protected species of birds,
including peregrine falcons, least terns, and black-
crowned night
