Cultivation
• It requires an altitude of 1900-2700m & low
night temp
• Seedlings raised in nurseries shaded by a
canvas covering 25cm ht from soil
• When they were 4months old planted in a
sunny situation in rows 1mt apart
Other method is
• Mature plants are divided into pieces bearing
roots Splits
• Splits planted & these bear flowers earlier
than plants from seeds
• Replanting is usual after 3 – 4 yrs
Collection
• 1st picking done when about
4 months old
• Best time is when 2/3 of disc
florets are open (it is difficult)
• So collected at 3wk intervals
sothat flowers at all stages of
development are got. But the
Pyrethrin content is low
• Dried by spreading on cloth
stretched frames
• Taken under cover during night
Description

• Color dull brownish / yellowish


• Odor aromatic
• Taste bitter , acrid
• Flowers are with capitulum
inflorescence ( ray & disc florets )

• Glandular trichomes are present on


the panels of ovary
• Ovary has 5 ridges .Space between
the ridges is known as panels
• Pericarp contains numerous ducts
containing secretions

Uses

• Insecticide
• Has rapid knock down action
• Extract is usually diluted with
kerosene to a strength of
0.2%pyterhrin
• Piperonyl butoxide is used as a
synergist
